The elected officials quoted seem unaware that service cuts usually have a much bigger impact on ridership than fare increases. Even more frustrating and maddening is that SANDAG is considering a tax increase that would fund more highway expansions while MTS could face deep service cuts.
Transit fare hikes or service cuts? Here’s what riders want, according to a new MTS study
One-way MTS fares haven’t been raised since 2008.

Every minute of every day in San Diego. There is zero enforcement.
So Chicago drivers are just unabashedly running red lights these days?

San Diego's dangerous as designed streets are functioning as intended. #VisionZero is never going to happen in San Diego as long as cars are prioritized over people.

"San Diego County has not seen average rent decline on an annual basis since the end of 2010. One of the drivers of the rent slowdown is a 5.7% vacancy rate, its highest since 2009."

Building more supply matters a lot, never mind that critics have deemed that new supply as "unaffordable".

San Diego rents are down 0.3% year-over-year to an average $2,520 per month.

If San Diego put as much emphasis on inexpensive housing for people as it does free or inexpensive housing for cars, we wouldn't have a homeless crisis. If we want better public spaces, we have to start by taking back at least a part of the enormous amount of public space devoted to cars.
How San Diego’s reliance on ‘hostile architecture’ reflects our abandonment of public space
The concept is used to describe public infrastructure design in San Diego and beyond that is intended to change behavior.

Oh, hell no! What public good is served by subsidizing rich people living in the riskiest locations?
This is what passes for progressivism and climate policy in California. Jane Kim’s answer for elevated fire risk and actuarial risk? Put it on the public dime. Urban renters should bail out well to do exurban property owners and landlords in fire zones. FAIR plan is already a ticking time bomb!

I’ve encountered that dangerous maneuver too many times. So far no vehicle collisions, but the worst was when the bus drive braked so hard I got thrown into the seat in front of me injuring my knees and another passenger got thrown to the floor.
Pickup driver behind us thought he could launch himself around the front of the bus to get to a driveway while we were pulling away from the curb. He could not.

Zero crashes riding MTS in 8 years and now 2 in one month. My luck is deteriorating.

Screens within view of the driver should go dark when the vehicle is in motion.

And if a city still provides parking for cars, most of those people that drive will insist that it be provided at no cost to them, never mind that the parking space costs something to build and maintain and reduces the tax base of the city.
“It's not my duty as Mayor to make sure you have a parking spot. For me it's the same as if you bought a cow, or a refrigerator, and then asked me where you're going to put them.” — Mayor of Pontevedra, Spain (re-elected 6 times)

"Chris Roberts, an activist with climate group San Diego 350, predicted the plan’s emphasis on highway expansions instead of the Purple Line will backfire, pointing to a SANDAG analysis that determined that more managed lanes will lead to more driving."
SANDAG has a new transportation plan. Now it must convince voters to pay for it.
Before an overwhelming vote of support from SANDAG’s board, CEO Mario Orso warned that a budget crisis at MTS could derail the future of transit in the region.

This is a plan even San Diego could afford if it was serious about #VisionZero.
Some ideas for improving road safety that can be implemented in US cities without modifying infrastructure:

• No cars moving through the intersection when pedestrians have a "walk" signal.

• No turn on red.

• 20 mph speed limit.

• Leading pedestrian interval for cyclists.

Reduced to buses and highway expansions. And bus projects always get watered down in favor of cars.

"Leif Gensert, vice president of transit advocacy group Ride SD, worries that rapid buses won’t offer service as reliable as the kinds of rail projects SANDAG now wants to downgrade and delay."
‘We have left the era behind of very big ideas’: SANDAG trades trains for buses in $125B transit vision
SANDAG’s latest wish list for transit hinges on one big assumption: that voters will back new sales tax measures.

Major cities on opposite ends of the country have now elected transit riders as mayors this year. That needs to be anything but exceedingly rare.
Miami just elected its first democratic mayor in 28 years.

Mayor-elect Eileen Higgins calls herself “La Gringa” and rides transit.

You see a city and its issues much differently when you don't just travel everywhere by car by default.
December 10, 2025 at 1:10 AM
San Diego will never tax itself enough to maintain all of its car infrastructure, nor should it. But the status quo of attempting to maintain all of that infrastructure without significant changes needs to stop.
We are in the early innings of people coming to grips with the real cost of building our cities almost exclusively for automobility
LA quietly stopped repaving all streets last July to avoid fulfilling its ADA obligations. The federal govt says when you repave a street, you have to update all the curb ramps. LA has tons of out of date curb ramps, so the rule makes repaving much more expensive. The city's solution: stop repaving!

Delivery robots should be limited to city streets until sidewalks are wide enough to accommodate them.
I came across *the* example I have been hammering with these food delivery robots.

A man with a mobility aid is forced to step aside because there is not room for him because the robot will not make room for a person (esp. those with a mobility aid who need addditional room)
