It's official. San Diego has the most obstructed bike lanes in the country. With only 8 streets in the urban core with bike lanes, the city should be able to quickly solve this problem with just a few miles of concrete barriers.

You're riding your e-bike to get to transit to get to work, on a sidewalk that is officially a bike path, and a distracted driver hits and seriously injures you in a marked crosswalk designed for drivers to drive right over.

E-bikes are not the problem, and neither is riding on the sidewalk.

Some losers are bitching about the Court St bike lane that is under construction, per usual. I've lost all patience with these people. Let's check out the reality on the ground with @brooklynspoke.bsky.social and @sgoodyear.bsky.social

Thursday, San Diego Planning Commission decides whether SDSU staff, UCSD Health nurses, and students can live near two trolley stations—or if we keep forcing them to drive from East County.

Let's dive into the College Area Plan! 1/9 🧵

For those of you on my feed who aren't from NorCal: this is an asinine construction project. The original SR-37 is built on a mudflat and it'll be underwater in a decade or three. It's a marginal road between two Bay Area suburbs, and they're spending $11 billion on it.

Caltrans has released a cross section for the ultimate (raised viaduct) version of SR-37.

Now maybe I'm just being paranoid, but if you were building a road that you planned to keep at 4 lanes wide, I don't think it would look like this.
Cross section of 114' wide bridge structure with each direction having a 12' outside shoulder and a 10' inside shoulder.

San Francisco's automated speed cameras after 6 months:
• 50% drop in extreme speeding
• 36% reduction in violations overall
• System PAYS FOR ITSELF through tickets
• Zero staff monitoring needed (fully automated)
• Revenue funds more safety improvements

This is what actual Vision Zero looks like.
Split-screen illustration comparing two public safety models: the left shows an automated speed camera reducing speeding and funding a “Community Safety Fund” in green-blue tones, while the right shows a dim red surveillance control room labeled “Resource Drain” with operators watching multiple screens.

First the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge Trail closure to enable a study for adding a car lane, and now this. It feels like MTC has lost the plot wrt the nexus between transportation and climate.

Today’s passage of AB 697 marks a major advance for long-running efforts to start work on a suite of projects to enhance North Bay marshlands and wildlife habitats, reduce flooding, improve traffic flow along Highway 37, and introduce transit service between Vallejo and Novato.

And the expanded highway will outlast the marsh after it dries up from climate change as a monument to mankind's stupidity.

If you're 40+ and you don't ride your bike around town what even is your plan for healthy aging?

I just don't understand older people who hate bike lanes.

This is super interesting and important; I wish I had learned about this sooner. My 18yo is pursuing pilot training, and it's sobering how much more care is taken in training a person to pilot a plane than in training one to drive a car. What if we took driving as seriously as we do flying?

Pedestrian-only spaces are not just for Central Park. They are the secret ingredient to great walkability and a fundamental element of livable cities. Let's stop treating them as a park luxury and start making this low-stress living a standard feature of our streets.

Speed safety cameras are astonishingly successful. We know the tools that reduce traffic violence. Legalize them.

A few days ago a Tesla pulled away from the curb about half a block in front of me (on bike) and then very slowly crept down the street. Driver was kind of hunched over, and as I overtook I glanced inside to see him messing around with the touchscreen.

iPads and cars, together at last! Joy.

"The single most important behaviour, design or regulation for creating streets conducive to walking and cycling, was physical separation between the modes"

We've got a new study out, learning from a broad mixture of street users, planners and designers

www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
Highlights
For marginalised street users mode separation is the key to human-scale movement.
Streets conducive to walking and cycling have functional, safe and accessible design.
Professionals must approach street design, regulation and user behaviour holistically.
Combinations of influencing factors persuade people to either use or avoid a street.
There are no easy fixes to the public realm that will work for all non-drivers.

💯 I also see literally 50% of drivers around here staring at their phones.

💯 Maybe a draw with cars rolling the stop limit line with tinted windows so I don't know if they're going to stop. I've started preemptively honking at any car with tinted windows 🤷‍♂️
