Campaigning for legal protections for neighbours of wood burners. Neighbours face inhumane levels of toxic pollution from "Ecodesign" stoves.

Typical of the stove industry's selfish attitude. Power outages are the worst time to burn wood as neighbours are unable to use their air purifiers. It costs us £££ to buy & run all the air purifiers, dehumidifiers, tumble dryers, etc we need when neighbours burn wood. Clean air poverty exists too!
nbrsvswoodsmoke.bsky.social
He was Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government who are responsible for the HETAS "Competent Person Scheme", allowing the stove industry to “mark their own homework” putting the lives of neighbours at risk. Did he declare a conflict of interest for this role?
nbrsvswoodsmoke.bsky.social
“Ecodesign” stoves now create more PM2.5 pollution than ALL powers stations in the UK and “modern” stoves burning “Ready to Burn” wood are the largest source of carcinogenic Benzo[a]pyrene in the UK. These extremely high emissions are often emitted less than 2m from neighbours windows.

How much influence did Robert Jenrick have on the aggressive stove industry lobbying that has devastated the health & lives of many people in SCAs after many decades of smoke free living? His father’s company has made huge profits from assaulting neighbours with toxic fumes from “Ecodesign” stoves.

To be fair (perhaps excessively so) his company did, at least, start out as gas fitters.

Please don’t imply that air pollution in London is no longer a problem. Good news for one pollutant, NO2, but many Londoners lives are still blighted by extremely toxic and carcinogenic PM2.5, Benzo[a]pyrene & many other emissions from failure to curtail wood burning, particularly in outer suburbs.
nbrsvswoodsmoke.bsky.social
Thanks for raising awareness of wood burning harms @johnwhitbymp.bsky.social PM2.5 & BaP emissions from deadly "modern" stoves have devastated the health of neighbours in areas where we were previously protected by the Clean Air Act.A tiny numer of people (<1m) causing> PM2.5 than ALL power stations
nbrsvswoodsmoke.bsky.social
Defra & the stove industry should be held accountable for the devastation caused to neighbours health from the disgraceful way that highly polluting “Ecodesign” stoves are “exempt” from Clear Air Act legislation. These deadly appliances have undermined all the improvements in road vehicles emissions

Barry Gardiner MP gave the audience food for thought, arguing that everyone harmed by pollution should be able to bring a case against the government, learning from the story of @ellarobertafdn.bsky.social. He rightly called for a new Clean Air Act - A HAC campaign!

Great to see the phrase “people who breathed other people’s smoke at home” used here. We need more awareness that burning solid fuel impacts the health of neighbours more than the person choosing to burn and that passive smoking includes all types of smoke!
nbrsvswoodsmoke.bsky.social
PM2.5, Benzo[a]pyrene & many other emissions are unacceptable too, yet no action has been taken to curtail the use of "Ecodesign" stoves or outdoor wood burning. These are completely unnecessary emissions in the ULEZ, yet likely contribute > 1000 tonnes of PM2.5 in London. Please address this too
nbrsvswoodsmoke.bsky.social
Their assumptions are flawed! TfL should not be responsible for undertaking the LAEI modelling. Their measurement locations are not in wood smoke hotspots and they are not measuring key pollutants. We intend to keep pushing to expose this failure to protect Londoners from "Ecodesign" emissions.
nbrsvswoodsmoke.bsky.social
The job is not done regarding PM2.5 because of the mayor's refusal to take action on “Ecodesign” stoves and all forms of outdoor solid fuel burning, which likely contributes over 1000 tonnes of PM2.5 in London compared to 23 tonnes PM2.5 reduction from ULEZ. (from NAEI data & govt stats)

Why do the stove industry want to poison us?

Why are modern wood burning stoves allowed in newbuild homes in the UK Future Homes Standard?

UK government data shows they are very polluting.

It would be great & save lives but unfortunately, like many in the Green Party, he wont take a stand on wood burning. They believe its an environmentally friendly form of air pollution with no treat to public health. At Northern AQ conference he said members don’t want #woodburning restrictions.

Whaaat!!! Wait!!!

A politician who talks about the importance of clean air?

Imagine the millions it would save in NHS bills

More people should not have to be harmed before this stops. The health impacts have been known for years!
nbrsvswoodsmoke.bsky.social
Excellent! Hopefully we will see more of this happening as people are becoming more aware of the health impacts of woodsmoke. Its a sad state of affairs that it has come to this- organisations worldwide should already know they should not be causing these completely unnecessary emissions.
nbrsvswoodsmoke.bsky.social
Yes, this horrible new fad is destroying the air quality in nearly every seaside town now. And they all claim to be "healthy" despite likely causing PM2.5 levels over 100 µg/m³ for hours! Positioning them by a children's playground shows the general lack of awareness of most local councils.
nbrsvswoodsmoke.bsky.social
Excellent! Great that woodburning is first on the list but it would be nice to see images of a wood burner representing air pollution, not the standard exhaust fumes and smoggy city image typically used in the media. Its the invisible toxic fumes that are the greatest threat in cities now.
nbrsvswoodsmoke.bsky.social
“Ecodesign” stoves, bonfires, charcoal BBQs and firepits are the main problem in cities now. They cause ~800 tonnes of PM2.5 in London every year. ULEZ savings are 23tonnes/year. A bonfire in a garden can cause similar PM2.5 levels in neighbours homes to wildfire smoke miles away.

Still no comment from you on Benzo[a]pyrene emissions? We are expected to tolerate high levels of this toxic carcinogen less than 2m from our windows so that the stove industry can profit from polluting the air in cities. Modern stoves burning "Ready to Burn" wood are proven to be largest UK source
nbrsvswoodsmoke.bsky.social
Please don’t teach children that burning wood is somehow environmentally friendly. Firepits, charcoal BBQs and bonfires emit 4.2kt of PM2.5 (7.5% of UK total) and more than double all road vehicle exhausts. Smoke harms the health of everyone. 1 in 11 CYP have asthma and wood smoke is a trigger.
nbrsvswoodsmoke.bsky.social
@eddavey.libdems.org.uk's constituency is full of homes churning out toxic woodsmoke yet have solar panels on their roof and EVS on drive. #Surbiton is worst place in UK for air pollution according to an IQAir study. “Ecodesign” stoves are used by <1m people, yet pollute more than ALL power stations
nbrsvswoodsmoke.bsky.social
Please take a stand on this too, @greenlibdems.org.uk Many “environmentalists” believe the stove industry greenwashing about wood burning, which has devastating impacts on public health and the environment.
nbrsvswoodsmoke.bsky.social
This is outrageously irresponsible! Come on ‪@greenparty.org.uk @zackpolanski.bsky.social @sianberry.bsky.social please take a stand on this as many of your members have fallen for this despicable misinformation that has ruined the AQ of communities and devastated the lives of vulnerable neighbours
