I think they brag about shooting a priest in the head, and they know they’re the bad guys, and they’re reveling in the naked power that being a bad guy has brought them.

Legally? No. They can refuse an *illegal* order, but they cannot legally refuse a legal order that they morally disagree with.

That being said, each person is always responsible for their own actions. They *can* refuse an order, but it would come with significant sanctions

Hey, Everyone!
Could you pretty pls try to find out where a video comes from before you post it?

Like tonite people noticed what befell Rev. Black 18 days ago. @mskellymhayes.bsky.social recorded a clip that brings home what happened. When people lift video without crediting, it loses key context.

CW: protester being struck in the head by a pepper ball

Footage I took earlier of the moment Reverend David Black, a regular protester outside of the Broadview Detention Center, was shot in the head with a pepper ball by ICE agents on the roof of the facility.

I'm not saying non-violence will prevent violence.

I'm saying with the space of non-violent resistance, we should be as maximal as possible. I'm saying *more* resistance will lead to *less* overall violence from the feds, and choosing *less* resistance will lead to *more* overall violence.
ncallaway.bsky.social
If the state (either State or Feds) tolerate this, and refuse to punish it, then the state is not legitimate.

These are core rights that they’re casually trampling on, and it makes them nothing more than a well armed mob.

Um, ICE just coldly shot an unarmed PRIEST in the head w a pepper ball when he (and everyone around him) clearly posed no threat.

For the crime of … complaining about government policy.

Core 1A speech.

With cameras rolling, they’re sniping priests for sport.

Yep, legal obsevers, journalists, and protest medics all have targets on their backs.
ncallaway.bsky.social
This is a crime. The state needs to prosecute this as a crime.

The man pulling the trigger must be arrested.

If the state tolerates this wanton violence, if the state *encourages* this lawlessness it is illegitimate.

These people are evil. Never stop saying so. Don’t be intimidated into shutting up.

Right, the thing that’s counter intuitive is that maximal non-violent resistance is the best way to minimize the coming violence of this administration.

A cautious, slow escalation of resistance is going to embolden the most violent factions of the administration

TL; DR
In the next 5 business days you should be able to go to Link's page on blacksky.community and see his posts and he'll be able to post but people using the bsky mobile apps won't see it.
After that we'll get Blacksky-only posts up.
After that we can talk about purging bsky mod tools

Most authoritarian governments are at their most tenuous grasp on power when they order the military to attack civilians. It’s… often a tipping point
ncallaway.bsky.social
I think it’s less the oath itself, so much as violating the oath is going to require them to more fundamentally break with human nature.

Most people have a hard time murdering innocent civilians.

I'm a kitchen sink person.

I think many people should be mocking them, their position, and everything they represent.

Others should pray for them.

Others should put a flower in their rifles.

And others should strike up a friendly conversation and make a friend.

There's so much that I despise about MAGA, but the short-term day-by-day, minute-by-minute thinking is definitely one of those aspects.

They're sundering the union, over such little petty bullshit
ncallaway.bsky.social
It will have monumental consequences, and I don't get the sense that Trump or Abbott have even really *considered* the ramifications of these actions, or what they represent.

I think Trump saw it as a convenient path of least resistance in the moment, and pressed the button.

It's one thing to be politically divided into red states and blue states. We are now being militarily divided into red states and blue states. It's crossing the Rubicon, a bright-red flashing warning that the constitutional order is coming unglued, in a way that will have monumental consequences. /x

I think that's a huge factor in killing the civic spirit and mind. I don't think I've ever really had *any* form of consent or input in the foundational structures of our government.

Yet that is a foundational assumption!
ncallaway.bsky.social
Like, I think Jefferson was a little extreme with the idea that a Constitution cannot really be binding beyond 19 years, but... it's insane to me that we describe the Constitution as the "consent of the people" when it's so horribly ossified.
ncallaway.bsky.social
This is probably more of a problem with modern politics than the framers, but I think it's a real problem that amending the Constitution is so hard. Sans the 27th amendment there hasn't been an amendment anywhere close to within my lifetime.
ncallaway.bsky.social
Absolutely. We really need to be advocating for basically the kitchen sink of non-violent resistance.
ncallaway.bsky.social
Yep. Like, NY has a bill to at least withhold all the federal payroll taxes that the state itself pays.

That's an easy one! Start there.
ncallaway.bsky.social
I'm sure some of these people are nice guys that under other circumstances I'd be happy to hang out with.

It's a shitty thing that the state of Texas is doing to put them in this position.
ncallaway.bsky.social
I'm sorry that they're currently the individuals that are the sharp end of the will of the people of Texas, but... they're the ones with their boots on the ground

I think invaded states should be resisting by *all* non-violent means, and that includes making the invading soldiers miserable.
