"A mind is a terrible thing to waste" - Forrest Long,
Check out the thread.

It's almost like Americans are programmed to both side their ways to justify apathy over and over again, since it's more important to be seen as authentic (aka not a hypocrite) than it is to make wise choices under undesirable circumstances.
The Bush administration disappeared people too, sent them to a different gulag at Gitmo and other black sites, kidnapped people off the street of Milan, tortured them, in the name of "a different kind of war."
We didn't come close to holding them accountable.
We're seeing the cost of that now.

I don’t think we’ll pay for this later. This reminds me of C++ developers turning their noses up at Visual Basic developers during my Microsoft days.

You can do valuable things with software or really any technology without knowing how it works

In 2023, a Google researcher wrote, “We have no moat, and neither does OpenAI.”

The paper argued open-source AI would outpace closed models by iterating faster and offering more flexibility. It also predicted users wouldn’t pay for restricted models when free ones were as good.

A prescient take.

A new era of government censorship has begun.
It started with the silencing of scientific speech, when the admin blocked release of research on bird flu. But MAGA has also cracked down on other wrongthink—on race, geography (!), and of course Trump himself

Indicative of the political moment that somebody can throw up something that looks like a Nazi salute at a political rally, and it’s other people who get in trouble for saying that’s a bad thing.

"That’s the dual hermeneutic the populists use for evaluating the world. If you’re an expert who got one thing wrong, it damns you. If you’re a total lunatic crank who gets one thing right, it makes makes you bulletproof."
Why is it that elites are held to a standard of perfection at all times, and populists are held to no standard at all?

This is kind of what I was talking about earlier in the week. Cons who think they're going to turn this killer into a villain are missing the bigger picture about what's going on in America.

I fully expected it.

I think we still downplay the significance of the country electing Trump after the events of Jan 6.

If we as a country could give him power after that, what protections were these media platforms going to have based on what Americans were signifying to the world?

Japan is always 20 years ahead culturally of the United States.

My guess is that since it's much more willing to embrace creative destruction tech, it deals with the economic and cultural consequences of it quicker as well.

An update from the frontier of Gen Alpha lingo: My eleven year old and his friend were calling each other "dude" and "bro," so I asked what the difference is. I was told "they're interchangeable," except, and this is important, a girl can be called "bro," but a girl cannot be called "dude."

And that my friend is the game. Works for Ramsey just like it works for Trump: people who “empathize” with you don’t necessarily share your interests
My Uber driver was listening to Dave Ramsey and I was struck by how his conversations are all about helping people in bad financial situations get out of them, but then his sponsors are often scammy companies preying on ignorance to get people to buy useless goods and services.

Businessmen must make decisions and face the consequences of being wrong.

So it's understandable that they don't empathize with consumers who make bad choices and don't want the government to protect them.

But they should be upfront about it rather than lying:

So much this.

So many of the grievances coming out these days boil down to "you should have been nicer to me."

If you listen to Andreessen and Horowitz's podcast on why they supported Trump it was literally "we asked to meet with Biden & he wouldn't. But Trump's kids would invite us to dinner."
if you can flip your beliefs because nobody kissed your ass enough, you didn’t really believe in what you said you did in the first place.

Podcasts now rival journalism in prominence but lack its integrity.

The low entry barrier forces them to compete for guests, requiring a friendly tone since guests have infinite options.

This makes podcasts ideal for spreading unchallenged messages—culminating in platforms like Joe Rogan’s.

We should call it the Dearborn Switcheroo, where people vote Republican based on "hope" that they will enact certain policies, and as soon as the election is over they give a middle finger to such voters and do the opposite.

How about those drop in prices?
