The thing about that is the incredibly vast majority of guns in the US are never used in crimes, so it would just be gun owners paying into an insurance system that nobody gets anything out of.

That's true. I read in David Yamane's Gun Curious about the concept of the human-weapon relationship, and how it went from pointy rocks to bows and then advanced to projectile weapons. People who want to defend themselves and their stuff have always had weapons, and guns are just the latest thing.

By your logic a bolt action rifle from WW1 is an assault weapon because it was made to storm trenches. Right now the most popular hunting rifles in the country are based on wartime designs.
