I think it'll be OpenAI running out of money to a sufficient degree that everyone whose accounts are held up by OpenAI equity can no longer keep it propped up and have to admit their losses. That's when it cascades.

The "follow" dichotomy I always struggle with is "I want to see every single thing you post" vs. "I want you to know that I like and respect you." My Following feed is so overstuffed as it is, but I hate the idea that people I don't follow back might think that I don't appreciate them!

Ideally yes. But they're not gonna, and we need to make our peace with that sooner or later.

Sort of the entire point. But at the same time, that's what's holding Mastodon back from wider adoption. People don't want to research instances. They want to give you an email address and password and start shitposting and/or start missing the point of other people's shitposts.

This is... True enough, I'd say. A big part of Bluesky's success so far has been because, up to this point, there's been just one way to sign up, one app to download.

I still think Mastodon could go far if they found a way to overcome that hurdle. I know, I know, the many different options are...
