Eventually I'll post an updated version where the date I abandoned a project is marked with a little skull

“Either this machine will be powerful enough to take your job or it’ll blow up and you’ll lose your job in a recession” is a tough outlook for white collar workers over the next few years.

Going to be pretty annoyed if decades of effort to build a very decent urban rail system didn't increase transit ridership, but tariffing the auto industry to hell and/or an oil shock does the trick
nicduquette.bsky.social
Wild to think that system ridership is still so far below where it was 10 years ago, especially now that the downtown connector is open

The E line. Definitely a large chunk of the extra people are getting on/off at the connection with the K line (which goes to LAX, although they mostly don't look like they are to/from a flight)
nicduquette.bsky.social
My train is busier than ever. I would guess that if you disaggregated by mode that train ridership would be gradually increasing and local buses are struggling

Aaand (checks notes) right on schedule...

We found that about 1/3 of FDA appointees go to industry within 2 years after their exit from the agency (rates were even higher at CDC and CMS).

My colleague & friend Richard Green raises good reason to NOT sign Trump’s compact: “the president “is a person who has not kept agreements for a very long time. If we are going to sell our soul, let’s not sell it to someone who is going to pull the football away.”

We just spent 6 months to add 1 figure to this paper. Some people said, "Couples aren't prioritizing men's careers. Men just have better earnings opportunities when moving."

Earnings effects of moves for couples on the left, singles on the right. Negligible gap between single men and women.
Event study coefficients that show that men's earnings rise more than women's among couples following a cross-commuting zone move (left panels). The pattern is muted or reverses among single men and single women (right panels).

(2) i wish non-economists would realise just how much time each economics paper takes to write (because of our norms about how thorough each paper has to be)

My grand theory for why we are where we are. This is the GSS data for "Generally speaking, would you say that most people can be trusted or that you can't be too careful in dealing with people?"

No one trusts anyone but Republicans have moved a lot.
Partisan breakdown in responses to survey question since the 1970s. Shows that Republicans have moved a lot, Independents are the least trusting.

Before I led BLS I was not as acutely aware of how many businesses, firms, and individual jobs depend on a stream of public use data. One estimate is that the $2 billion the US spends on economic data creates a $200+ billion industry of 'data-intensive' businesses. pubs.aeaweb.org/doi/pdfplus/...

As if irony isn’t already dead, the Hatch Act violation on the DOJ website, which blames Democrats for the shutdown, appears on the page advising DOJ employees they are subject to the Hatch Act. joycevance.substack.com/p/a-note-abo...

I like sports but don’t have time to watch sports regularly. Every time I do the sports betting marketing gets worse. Dodgers announcers are reluctantly reading a script for whatever betting app bought the time. Gross.

TIL that during many of the big urban fires (SF 1906, Chicago 1871, London 1666) responders used gunpower and TNT to create firebreaks by **blowing up buildings**

The Department of Labor has released its plan in the event of a government shutdown.
Key takeaway for econ data: There will NOT be a jobs report on Friday (or any subsequent data releases) if funding isn't restored in time. #NumbersDay #EconSky
