Cinerus is far too self-centered to ever care about another person. He covets power & control above all.
In his mind, people are sorted into 'conquered' or 'to be conquered'. He rules through fear & his top minion is a genuine psychopath who follows him solely for opportunities to commit violence.

Pretty much all but one of the protagonists have baggage in their backstory that isn't 100% fleshed out on page, but enough is there that others can pick up on it. The longer they're together, the more they get to know each other, the better positioned they are to help deal with each others demons.

A little; since it's a fantasy setting, not a ton research was required on the whole. A lot of names are derived from real-world etymology across multiple languages. A bit of actual mythology is mixed up with this world's. Did some research on martial arts for some fight scenes.
