Wind instruments generate oscillation in the air within them using whatever place you send air in, e.g. a brass mouthpiece or a woodwind reed. Frankly flutes still kind of seem like magic to me, I don’t really know why they work.

String tension makes it possible for them to oscillate, which is what we need for musical sounds. Tighter string makes for faster vibration, which we perceive as a higher pitch. Without intervention, that tensile force will dissipate one way or another.

It’s a cool piece and I like it a lot, I just wish we had 10x the rehearsal time to put it together.

It’s both a relief and intimidating to realize “Wow, even ________ couldn’t quite pull this off.”

We have multiple points in the piece I’m calling escape hatches, where no matter what’s been happening, we all agree that a certain cue (re)defines the downbeat if necessary.

Basically the same thing, just a base of cider instead of red wine. Add whiskey and/or brandy if you want to make it alcoholic.

Wassail is a great drink fwiw. Basically mulled cider with a lot of spices and lemons and oranges, plus a large quantity of whiskey if that’s your thing.

Public transit doesn’t have to mean subway systems, if that’s what you’re implying by “not designed for”. Suburban areas can have buses on the same roads the cars are already on, for example.

If there’s nothing on Google, then probably. Real human artists are generally desperate for people to listen to their music so they’ll have an easily found online presence. Especially likely if this was on Spotify.

Now I’m wondering what the number one family feud answer for “name an opera” would be. Marriage of Figaro?

lmao same, I just traded in my 12 because I was getting concerned I would break it too hard to be able to do that

I had a 2012 MBP until last year and made a similar choice. Pricey up front but it honestly ought to last me at least as long if not more.

With Netflix you at least got to watch the movie. Uber at least did give you the ride to where you were going. With this you get... what? A throwaway email draft? A legal filing full of errors and fabrications? An "epic roast of someone's appearance"? This is pet rocks

When ChatGPT first went public I played around with it a bit, and there was a very short but lovely period where it was just “Wow, this is really impressive, neato” before the insane self-destructive hype cycle took off.

I don’t remember ever getting that perspective in his writing before, certainly not from Jeeves.

I’m reading a non-Jeeves novel of his (The Girl On The Boat) and there was a fascinating perspective shift where said girl tells a valet to deliver a secret message to her man and he promises discretion, and then immediately he’s going into the kitchen and telling all the staff about it.

I do wonder if YouTube is kind of artificially inflated on here, because I watch videos on there but I don’t really interact with or follow anyone else. It’s not a social experience for me at all, and I wouldn’t put it in the same category as the other apps/sites here.
