Hey, Bluesky!

I'm a cartoonist, writer, video maker, and Star Trek fan. I do fan panels at conventions and help run Trek Track at Dragon Con.

My romcom webcomic Treading Ground came back LITERALLY TODAY after 13 years. Talk about timing!

A comic strip featuring three grocery store employees. The first panel shows the exterior of a grocery store called "Food Baron" with a parking lot and cars. A speech bubble from a character off-screen says, "Sup, Kate. Is that the new schedule?"

The second panel shows a woman with purple afro hair (Kate) looking at a schedule, responding, "Yep. Freshly squeezed from Corbin’s teat." A man next to her says, "Wow, I’m closing on Saturday night AGAIN??"

In the third panel, a woman with glasses, named Tracy (per her name tag), sarcastically teases, "Aww, so poor widdle Natey-Wate has to work a Saturday? Suck it up, buttercup!" The man, Nate, rolls his eyes, replying, "Ugh, here we go."

The next panel shows Tracy smirking, continuing, "I bet he schedules you like that because he knows there’s no chance you’re out hooking up on weekends." Nate responds, "Isn’t it time for you to slither off to lunch, Tracy?"

The final panel zooms in on Tracy, waving and smiling as she walks away, saying, "Toodaloo, incel!" with a heart symbol. A four-panel comic featuring my OC Aya, a woman with short, dark blue hair, sitting in front of a laptop.

In the first panel, she looks thoughtful, with her hand on her chin, thinking, "Hmm... Am I posting too much and annoying people in the chat?"

In the second panel, she smiles confidently and responds to herself, "...Of course not! Can't be annoying if nobody ever THINKS about you!"

In the third panel, her expression shifts to one of shock, eyes wide, as she realizes the implication of her own statement.

In the final panel, she covers her face with both hands in despair. Art of my OC Kate King. She has punkish hair with dark red locs over a black undercut, dark skin, freckles, purple nail polish and maroon-ish lipstick. She's wearing a black (hopefully fake) leather vest, dark blue jeans and a burgundy tank top. She's looking away embarrassed while handing you a heart-shaped red box with a black bow on it that says "Happy V-Day". A six-panel comic featuring a man (my OC Nate) and a woman (my OC Rose) sitting at a table in a restaurant with drinks.

In the first panel, Nate holds his cup and looks behind him, saying, "Be right back, grabbing a refill." Rose asks, "Oh, can you get me one too?"

In the second panel, Nate turns back and awkwardly asks, "Sure. Can you take your top off?"

The third, fourth and fifth panels focus on Rose, who looks surprised and confused at first, then appears to blush while considering the request, and finally grins mischievously and starts to lift her shirt up.

In the sixth panel, Nate, flustered and blushing, hurriedly clarifies, "The DRINK! The top of your DRINK!" Rose reaches offscreen for her cup and simply responds, "Ah."

We noticed the same thing - no interracial couples. Closest we came was Little John dancing with Lady Kluck.

Overall though, it holds up. Lots of funny moments, and the Sherriff of Nottingham sounds like Ted Cruz so I was basically laughing every time he was on screen.

Wait, I'm sorry: WHAT tf is happening? Is Bsky Trust & Safety actually saying that they don't provide input on the 3rd party "AI" that is the 1st tier of all image & video moderation on this website? Am I actually reading that right? Because that seems like a completely bananas way to run a railroad

Rewatched Disney's Robin Hood for the first time since I was a kid, and I'm not sure what was behind the decision to make Robin and Marian look so similar.

Like, maybe do some basic genealogy before you two get married? You are the only foxes in this entire movie and you look like identical twins.
A screenshot from Disney's Robin Hood (1973) showing Robin Hood and Maid Marian walking down the aisle on their wedding day. They look exactly alike except for clothes, height, and eyelashes.

A sensible precaution. She'd probably kidnap a child and shoot a dog on the way to the toilet

Kristi Noem is mad they wouldn’t let her in to use the restroom in Illinois today.

I would love to see a modern Discord-like interface with all the bells and whistles and UX improvements built on top of an IRC foundation. Looks like the closest anyone comes is @irccloud.com.

every time something like this happens, there's a part of me that goes 'what you need is your own irc server'

it's extremely wrong on multiple levels, totally different vibe for a really big one but it keeps coming back like a shitty zombie anyway

I was also pretty low on Substack, but I moved to Beehiiv anyway. I think it's really important to have a direct line to your audience without relying on them to happen to see it on their feed somewhere, so each newsletter subscription is worth a lot.

That was my hole, it was made for me

Chapter 1 | Page 30: Alive

Nate: No, I wanted to thank you for not giving up on me.
Nate: For dragging me out of that hole and making me live my life again.

Steve (flippant): We needed another roommate.

Steve (sincere): And I wanted that roommate to be my best friend. Who was still alive.

Nate: I might not have been, if you hadn't kept sending me lewd memes.
Steve: And you never did anything more than laugh-react. Interact with a motherfucker some time!

i made a helpful reference
top right: a fractured black rectangle where one half is labeled "autism is bad" and the other side is labeled "FACT CHECK: autistic people are productive members of society".

top left:
WRONG
-negating their frame reinforces it
-starts with what it isn't instead of what it is
- your argument is shaped like their argument

bottom right: large image of Kirby, a pink blob inhaling and the "autism is bad" fragment, labeled THEY'RE DOING EUGENICS

bottom left:
RIGHT
- you eat their frame
-starts with what's actually happening
-contains and explains what they're doing
-your argument is shaped like kirby

(Nate returning car keys to Steve)
Steve: See? I told you they'd hire you back.

Nate (thoughtful): You did, and I need to thank you.

Steve (shocked): Holy shit, Nate's actually showing some appreciation? What gives?

Steve: Wait a minute, did you fucking VAPE in my car? If I get in there and it smells like FARTBERRY SWIRL, you're getting it steam-cleaned.

Exactly! It is by no means high cinema, but there's definitely a enjoyment to be extracted from it. Also, both Pattinson and Stewart have gone on to do some cool shit.

TBH a lot of the opposition stank of misogyny - "this is a thing that women like, therefore I must hate it or I'll catch the gay"

Much like the Justin Bieber hatred of the day, the whole "let's make fun of Twilight" era is pretty embarrassing in hindsight.

In this shitty world, I'm not going to blame anyone for lusting after a brooding sparkly vampire twink

I'll bite. That's very close to Aya's body type

I gotta say, for the first panel, the siren song that is drawing a Tex Avery-style wolf reaction face called to me like hype-fueled market manipulation calls to a crypto bro. That is to say, it felt virtually irresistible but I knew it would hurt things in the long run.
