It's Black Press Day. And the historic Black press understood what it was like to be targeted, surveilled, charged with crimes, even jailed. As similar threats loom, we should take a look at this history. Read/Listen/Share/Subscribe to Fortify here: nicolefcarr.substack.com/p/the-histor...
The historic Black press and the attempt to criminalize journalists
I've long thought about the potential for U.S. journalists to be jailed in America for doing our jobs. We should remember how the government came after Black journalists in the not-so-distant past.

Dear @ire.org: AccessFest is here! I'm joining the fabulous @nicolefcarr.bsky.social at 10 a.m. ET Friday Oct. 10. Nicole's writing shows how Black journalists have contributed to journalism from day one because history matters. I write about my journey as a Latina producing investigations. Join us!
Pictures of Nicole Carr and Mc Nelly Torres, both investigative journalists of color, who publish independent newsletters in Substack. The 30-minute session is about what they write and how to do it yourself.

Thank you for replying. I have lots of thoughts on this (industry-wise). And I’m grateful for all of those who continue to bear witness.

This is great reporting.
Can I ask you something?
Totally understand the need for a second source in your own reporting, but given where we are today with all the indecent norms (and where we’ve been in this country), why did this concept of separation by race seem too insane to be true?

Good reporting on the South Shore raid from South Side weekly here.

Confirms one thing I was told but didn't put in my own piece because I didn't have a second source and it seemed too insane: border agents segregated arrested residents by race

Federal Agents Storm South Shore Building, Detaining Families and Children
Families were woken by flashbangs and helicopters as hundreds of federal agents raided their homes. Days later, neighbors are still searching for the missing.

Spoke about race, media, industry and America with April Ryan’s USC “Fact-Based Reporting and the Rise of Independent Journalism” study group. April is the longest serving Black member of the White House Press Corps. What a conversation. Grateful for students who have the fire for these times.

FINALLY signed my 75-year-old uncle up for @thetriibe.com. He got a welcome email and cussed me out because
1) The email didn’t address him as “Uncle Johnny.”
2) A physical paper doesn’t come with the membership

Anyway…this is a huge win for me 😂

It is reasonable-even NECESSARY-to be critical of news coverage. But what we’re not going to do on this Internet is talk about issues not being covered when they appear on A1 and in the A-block. Media literacy in this country is 🗑️ and can be included in the dumpster of daily crises we face.

Absolutely.

I had a liberal centrist — a professional — once tell me that they engage with more diversity at a Bari Weiss dinner party than they do in any mainstream media event.

I mention this because, just as it is true in politics at the moment, some of the calls are coming from inside the house.

Funniest part of this memo involves an ahistorical account of the “founding of the media” and its purpose.
*Stares in historic Black press…

perhaps the biggest story TFPever ran was a catastrophically shoddy argument that George Floyd ackshully died of an overdose. When confronted with irrefutable evidence that the piece was simply wrong, Weiss didn’t take it down, she asked her critic, @radleybalko.bsky.social, to come on a podcast.

Federal officer blasts chemical spray into vocal but nonviolent Portland protester, video shows

The interaction illustrates how federal law enforcement officers do use aggressive tactics against protesters who yell and needle officers but don’t appear to present clear physical threats.

“…the operation’s name closely resembles “Operation Blitzkrieg",a WW II-era Nazi Germany combat approach that describes “offensive warfare designed to strike a swift, focused blow at an enemy using mobile, maneuverable forces.. armored tanks and air support.” nicolefcarr.substack.com/p/what-about...
What about the children now?
They routinely shout about protecting children and families. But a party that backs violent, dehumanizing ICE enforcement tactics has yet to decry how gov't is traumatizing kids at home and school.

Just noticed the Conservatives’ British ICE proposal also involves using mass deployment of facial ID – still an unproven and unreliable technology that particularly struggles with non-white faces – to enable deportations.

Which would inevitably mean false positives leading to detention of citizens

Before you can narrate an accurate story, you must demand to unmask ICE. Or at least recognize that agents are masked.

I recently encountered one of my nemeses and update: he is still a nemesis. This man cannot help himself. We are peers but he cannot keep from negging me to my face. In front of people. He smiles and says some slick, backhanded shit and smiles some more. One day…one day i will pop off.

There would not be wall-to-wall coverage because America has a fear and and an appetite for this.

I wrote about children facing trauma in ICE raids led by the party that claims to protect children. In Chicago, the mission name closely resembles that of a Nazi Germany war mission title. And protective norms have been broken. Let’s re-examine how we center coverage: substack.com/@nicolefcarr...
