This is also why I think car manufacturing is going to move down the value chain. The Chinese recognized they couldn’t catch up to between 60 to 100 years of ICE drive train engineering. With that complicated mess eliminated road vehicle manufacturing should be achievable for many more countries.

As an addendum I should add American locomotives are actually an electric drive train just coupled to a diesel generator

UWSer worried about spending 5 v 3 dollars? Find me this mythical person.

Yes the lack of LIRR ridership in the city is due to frequencies not price.
nilo.bsky.social
Everyone technical (outside of American railroaders) has known for well over a century that an electric drive train is superior to an internal combustion engine. The ICE’s value came entirely from the ability to store a lot of fuel in a compact and easy to manufacture manner.

i’d say the real killer feature of EVs is basically the lack of real maintenance costs.

Plenty of people will transfer to Penn station on the LIRR if given the chance.

MONEY TRAIN TO THE GAME: "The MTA would have to spend at least $3 million in contracted union fees to provide the same special game-day service to Citi Field as Metro-North gives Yankee fans to go to the House that Ruth Built, data obtained by Streetsblog shows." nyc.streetsblog.org/2025/10/08/m...
MONEY TRAIN: How LIRR Unions 'Game' The System - Streetsblog New York City
An old work rule means that the MTA would have to pay millions of dollars just to provide a little extra service after special events like Mets games or the Ryder Cup.

In brighter news, ridership on the Bay Area's Caltrain continues to grow in the wake of the route's electrification—ridership is up 52% compared to this time last year, hitting the highest levels since the onset of the pandemic

The California fire marshal has created an email address for comments from the public on the legislatively mandated single-exit work group: [email protected]

If you have any comments (any at all, whether particularly novel or not), please send them.

This is remarkable. The world added more solar and wind capacity in 2024 than we added demand. 100% of demand growth PLUS 9% to retire dirtier sources. Cheap energy keeps winning. ember-energy.org/latest-insig...

Does that mean Connecticut and New York have to turn over their portions?

It only lose time south of tarrytown though where there would be no conflict with this Amtrak train as it should be entering the express tracks behind it at Croton Harmon. The fact it encountered congestion somewhere between tarrytown and Harlem is a different problem.

Since I had run out of brainpower for more important tasks, I decided to dedicate the end of my afternoon to writing the story of Genova, its railways, its tunnels, and, of course, its port, finally putting to good use some historical mapping I had done a while ago

I think a big thing here is there’s some supposed to be like blasting?

But I would agree last years red line amputation was absurd. Somehow it was fine for CSX and Marx to continue to operate but the red line was shut north of fort Totten for months.
nilo.bsky.social
I don’t know.
nilo.bsky.social
This amputation is going to be brutal.

I can't stop thinking about this. We're pursuing zero fire risk in multifam, while tolerating much more in single-fam. People respond by building and living in single-fam, where they're exposed to not only one of the highest fire death risks in the developed world, but also TONS more car crash risk

Love this new report on buildings' relative fire safety from @alexhrwtz.bsky.social and Pew colleagues.

Good reporting on the South Shore raid from South Side weekly here.

Confirms one thing I was told but didn't put in my own piece because I didn't have a second source and it seemed too insane: border agents segregated arrested residents by race

Federal Agents Storm South Shore Building, Detaining Families and Children
Families were woken by flashbangs and helicopters as hundreds of federal agents raided their homes. Days later, neighbors are still searching for the missing.

To add to your point many agencies that self fund are on furlough right now because their ability to spend the fees they bring in is suspended.
