I once described the goal of my creative process in general and my certainty-seeking ASK ALL THE THINGS queries to performers in particular as "turning infodumping into auditory stim" 😂

I think this was very much me playing with the MIDI sounds of the harp after being inspired by demonstrations of this specific low-mid register in Danielle's harp writing guide, and then checking in with her on whether I'd added anything unidiomatic. It absolutely felt like the process of stimming

I have been trying to persuade myself to write music that is explicitly conceived as being pleasing to my senses, something I've only managed a couple of times - here's an example for solo harp that I wrote for/with the assistance of @daniellekuntzharp.bsky.social youtu.be/lwPqCtcs9nI

I love this! Thank you for sharing your composition, I really enjoyed listening to it. I found it very evocative, it gave me a very rich multisensory response.

I'm curious, what was your creative process like when writing this?

This really meant so much! I had to present remotely due to my health, but with all these incredible accessibility measures in place I wish I could have been there in person! Thank you @ndhumanities.bsky.social @louisecreechan.bsky.social @drrobertchapman.bsky.social and the other organisers 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

As a researcher with Long Covid, I want to highlight the fact this conference encouraged mask wearing (they even provided FFP3 masks to in person attendees!!) and other viral protective measures. Clinically vulnerable people are often forgotten in academia, even in disabled circles. 3/...

...to having dedicated quiet, sensory and networking rooms, a traffic light communication system, recordings of talks, wheelchair accessible spaces, detailed guidance on what to expect, live transcripts, and many other measures! 2/..

Catching up on the recordings of the talks I couldn't attend at the Critical Neurodiversity Studies conference from last week. This conference was an epitome of accessibility, from being fully hybrid (including ways for online attendees to network with in person ones)... 1/

In case you missed it, a presentation by our Director Beatriz López. @drstevenkapp.bsky.social, and @eminegurbuz.bsky.social delivered a good practice research showcase on Creating an inclusive research culture for neurodivergent researchers, as part of the Uni's Research Culture Connect-Fest.
University of Portsmouth Centre for Interaction, Development and Diversity Director Beatriz López presents on her talk with Steven Kapp and Emine Gurbuz at the UoP Research Culture Connect-Fest, with the slide reading Good Practice Showcase 1: Creating an inclusive research culture for neurodivergent researchers.

As Autism Acceptance Month (AAM) comes to a close, with disability benefits internationally under threat, here is a summary of my papers since the last AAM to demonstrate autism acceptance means recognizing and supporting disability, rather than weaponization/co-option ('neurodiversity-lite'). 1/

I’m all for neurodivergent-friendly hours at the shop, where they stop the music, make the tills quiet, etc. Hell, I would prefer that myself

But ffs if you do this for only one hour a week, between 12 and 13 on a MONDAY… screw off with the performative activism

No matter what the results of tonight's vote please remember that your life has value no matter how much 'work' you can do and no matter what the ableist pricks in government tell you!

SICK IS NOT LAZY!
Fuck Labour, these amendments are not an improvement, delaying the life-threatening cuts for existing claimants doesn't make them OK!

I had a great time today discussing Autistic creative processes with @angelakingdon.bsky.social for @autisticculture.bsky.social, brainstorming ways to reclaim the joy of our sensory experiences through creative practice.

#ActuallyAutistic What are your ways of doing that?

The FOMO is real, so many interesting talks!! Yours sounded so interesting too, I look forward to watching the recording!

I'm attending remotely, but would love to grab a virtual coffee sometime (after the conference of course!) Feel free to send me a DM 🙂

Great day today at our Critical Neurodiversity Studies Conference! Highlights included a keynote from Lisa Johnson and Liorah Hoek & Sanne van Driel’s workshop on what understanding experiences of plural identities can bring to critical neurodiversity studies. The Sensory Den was also a real hit!
Liorah Hoek and Sanne van Driel smiling at the camera. They are standing in front of a PowerPoint slide in a seminar room. On half of the slide is blue and the other is white with orange and green paint splotches. On the blue slide of the slide the text reads 'The Plurality Game'. The floor in The Sensory Den – a pop up sensory room. There are yellow and red jigsaw pieces, a red glowing stool, and three marble effect tiles in pink and orange and green and blue. A lime green and orange lava lamp on a bench, a large cube to the right, and fibre optic tails in white/light blue on the floor. A fan arrangement of conference programmes with abstract artwork in pink, orange, light blue and black. On the right there are white circles connected with white lines. The title on the programme reads: 'Critical Neurodiversity Studies Conference: Directions / Intersections / Contradictions, 24–26 June 2025, Durham University and Online.'

I had a great time this afternoon presenting my collaboration with Niamh Gallagher as part of a fascinating panel on arts-based practices in neurodiversity research!

Looking forward to another exciting day tomorrow at the Critical Neurodiversity Studies conference @durhamimh.bsky.social
The title slide from a PowerPoint presentation, on a light blue background. In the middle of the slide, the text reads “Collaborative musical practice as embodied exploration of neurodivergence and disability, by Nina Danon and Niamh Gallagher”. At the top of the slides are three logos: the Arts and humanities research council, the Consortium for the humanities and the arts south-west England, and Goldsmiths University of London.

the Critical Neurodiversity Studies Conference @durhamimh.bsky.social starts tomorrow! Wishing I could attend literally every talk/panel/workshop.

I’ll be speaking about why critical media studies is essential to a critical turn in neurodiversity studies - catch me on the Digital panel tomorrow 🤸!

Not every passion must be mined for teachable moments. Gem Clutton explains that for children with monotropic attention profiles, which are widely understood within autistic communities as a core feature of autistic cognition, this approach can easily go astray. loom.ly/8TEBOJM
When joyful autonomy matters so much more than curriculum outcomes
There is a particular kind of attention some children bring to the things they love. What is monotropism? How should we respond?
