The Bylines Network, where I work, will be running a joint event with Hope Not Hate next month, looking at what we can do about extremist attempts to take over our politics, and the failure of some of our existing institutions to resist. Come along and join the resistance.
A flyer which says "Hope Against Hate: How citizens and journalists can reclaim democracy," and has the Bylines Network logo on it. At one side it says "7pm, 4 November 2025. Book now. https://bit.ly/BylinesHope " and at the other it says "George Monbiot, Nafeez Ahmed, Nick Lowles, Yasmin Alibhai-Brown."

Highland cattle are famous for their ability to "disco nap". Normally these brief, efficient sleeps will last between three and twenty minutes, deploying a variety of objects as pillows, including moorland boulders, cars or any particularly large dog or sheep who happens to be nearby.
A highland cow having a little nap on a boulder on Dartmoor (ok, it was actually scratching its head)

"We used to ring up our GP and get an appointment on the same day," says Kemi Badenoch. She does not add: we're all looking for the guy who did this!

Of the six on my English degree: a TV exec responsible for big global hits; one who started the first blog on a national paper; one MBE for services to UN poverty relief; a life spent in community citizen's advice; one of the UK's foremost book reviewers. And then me, but five out of six ain't bad.

This is a good game.

I have an English degree and boosted a major publishing house’s share price, and saved a high street retail chain from closure.

If a Mickey Mouse degree lets you create actual Mickey fucking Mouse, it’s probably easily as good “for the economy” as business studies.

*deep sigh* Again, I have an English degree and have contributed rather extensively to the British economy, including writing a show that pumped £10 million into Wales. But the stupidity is the point here, of course.

We had one of these. It was a loved and hated device by my mum. She loved it because you could turn up the ring volume... hated it because the hand set was always slipping off accidentally.

A reminder of how Mrs Thatcher's Conservative party in 1983, an era featuring much more widespread racial prejudice in the public, approached the issue of race and national identity:

How is this repeatedly made into a policy issue - by *all* parties - when the blunt fact of the matter is that grown adults who are obliged to pay for their own education, and relentlessly pursued to repay their loans, should be able to study whatever the fuck they want.

Ruth Gordon was born during the reign of Queen Victoria but she could have seen back to the future in theaters

Your missing one other, she won it in 1981... But better known for a significant genre role.

What have you got? It's ok, doesn't look as though anyone else is playing but looking at your breakdown, you're missing a woman

Not going to lie, we only got two. Which is, I conceded, disastrously shoddy!

Killer question from tonight's pub quiz - no googling!- name the six actors who have won an Oscar whose names ended in 'K'?

The way they've made it look as though they were written for six-year-olds is astounding on some level.
