Most crops in the British Isles? Gone.

A colder, drier climate devastating our food system.

UK arable land set to crash from 32% to just 7%.

Haven’t heard much about this? That’s why these people turned up in London today with their AMOC bomb. 🧵

Lest we forget

6-year-old Hind Rajab's last words with medics on the phone before being shot by 355 IDF bullets. They asked “Hind, why aren’t you speaking?” Hind, “I’m not talking because when I talk, blood comes out of my mouth & makes my clothes dirty. My mum doesn't want my clothes dirty.”

"Martin Forde concluded Labour operates a hierarchy of racism, where anti-Black racism & Islamophobia are brushed aside.
Now we have a Prime Minister who mimicked Enoch Powell with “island of strangers” & suspended the UK’s first Black woman MP twice.
It’s institutional racism."

Arctic #bumblebees have adapted to (up to now!) a short cool flowering season.
They have large first broods of about 16 female workers that forage continuously all day and overnight during bright #arctic nights.

Here's a CO2-fire-insect interaction that I hadn't considered.

It may be that beetle wood-boring activity allows fuels to burn more completely and release more CO2.

Do wood‐boring beetles influence the flammability of deadwood?
Global warming increases the risk of wildfire and insect outbreaks, potentially reducing the carbon storage function of coarse woody debris (CWD). There is an increasing focus on the interactive effe....

So much profound beauty in our world. But it seems the forces unable to see beyond their own wealth, power, and egos are in the ascendant right now.

It's our duty to mind ourselves and each other in these tough times, which may well get much worse. The living world depends on us never giving up. 🌍

Kiripiti Reserve in Te Horo is also special because it contains some of the best remaining examples of wild growing akeake (Dodonea viscosa) on the Kāpiti Coast.

As we walked my friend Donna-Mari retold the story of Akerautangi, the father of Taiaha.

We've just finished scything the reed in "car park fen" (so named given its proximity to a hospital car park). This area is still being restored, and will likely need cutting twice more this year. Looking forward to seeing which seeds we spread last year germinate!

Pollen ‘safe sites’ exist on bee bodies which bees can’t reach when grooming (waist & dorsal area of thorax/abdomen).
The anthers/stigmas of #flowers regularly come into contact with these parts ensuring #pollination.
