“This is a man who’s suffering dementia,” said @govpritzker.illinois.gov. “This is a man who has something stuck in his head … He doesn’t read. He doesn’t know anything that’s up to date. It’s just something in the recesses of his brain that is effectuating to have him call out these cities.”
Gov. JB Pritzker says President Trump deploying troops to Chicago due to ‘dementia’ and obsessive fixations
Democratic governor’s comments came as he continues to oppose President Donald Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops to Chicago area for deportation efforts.

Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

Um, ICE just coldly shot an unarmed PRIEST in the head w a pepper ball when he (and everyone around him) clearly posed no threat.

Big thanks to everyone that contributed to keep FlyBase operational. I wish our FlyBase colleagues the best navigating this challenging situation-special thank you to those that moved on. FlyBase is an essential/amazing resource for Drosophila scientist and the broader scientific community.

FlyBase Update – October 2025
The termination of the NIH/NHGRI FlyBase grant has placed the long-term sustainability of FlyBase at risk. However, thanks to the generous support of several key individuals and institutions, we are pleased to announce that FlyBase will remain operational through the coming year. We extend our deepest gratitude to Yukiko Yamashita, Cassandra Extavour, Hugo Bellen, Thom Kaufman, the Genetics Society of America / Drosophila Board, the Bloomington Drosophila Stock Center, an anonymous donor and the Wellcome Trust. We are especially thankful for a generous gift from Seemay Chou, Jed McCaleb, and The Navigation Fund. We also greatly appreciate the continued support from the broader Drosophila community – your donations and service fees have been vital in helping us stay afloat. Special thanks also go to Jessica Manning for her tireless administrative work at Harvard, to Ruth Lehmann, Hugo Bellen, and Paul Sternberg for advice and efforts, and to the Board of the European Drosophila Society for all their efforts. Sadly, we must also share that several long-standing FlyBase team members have recently moved on. We are immensely grateful to Susan Russo-Gelbart, Lynn Crosby, Gil dos Santos, Kris Broll, Victoria Jenkins, and TyAnna Lovato for their many years of dedicated service and contributions to FlyBase. Looking ahead, ensuring FlyBase’s sustainability beyond the next year – and successfully integrating with the Alliance – will require new funding sources. We kindly ask for your continued support:
	•	European labs: Please consider contributing to the Cambridge, U.K. FlyBase group
	•	U.S. and other non-European labs: Please consider contributing to the U.S. FlyBase groups
	•	Both U.K. and U.S. FlyBase are working diligently to establish an invoicing system. We appreciate your continued patience.

Some of the people they rounded up - IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT - are US citizens. Some of them are kids who are US citizens and have been stolen from their parents.

If you ever wondered how so many Germans could pretend not to know what was happening in the 1930s/40s, now you know.

This morning, the Trump Administration’s Department of War gave me an ultimatum: call up your troops, or we will. It is absolutely outrageous and un-American to demand a Governor send military troops within our own borders and against our will.

It’s a core First Amendment principle. This is utterly lawless behavior, for which there will be no (short-term) consequences.

That he does it so casually, as they are walking away, in front of cameras.

Rightly confident in his impunity.

My sub-entity agency within the Department of State was instructed to implement messaging in our "out of office", targeting the Democrats.

We were told they would check our emails individually, and it could cost us our jobs if we didn't.
