California has now banned algorithmic price fixing.

The state has outlawed the practice of landlords colluding to raise prices using rental software and AI.

This is a huge victory for renters in the biggest state in the country.

Yeah I'm sure there are plenty of people who have varying forms of MacNeil names BUT my family actually did a thing and we can trace our roots to Barra so /I AM A PIRATE, SHUT UP/

Every year when Talk Like A Pirate Day comes along I JUST TALK LIKE ME

GUYS

Some of you may have heard me tell the story about how my ancestors were pirates. (It is true. I come from a proud legacy of shenanigans.) But like, it was just something I had heard! It was a story.

GUYS GUYS GUYS I found a webpage about them!!!

I have discovered a new band today! That song is excellent. Thank you.

Good question! It depends on a lot of factors — where are you, what experience do you have, and what sort of vehicle do you have? I'm not from Colorado, so I don't have a lot of expertise in trails in the Colorado area (I know Black Bear by reputation!), but I can recommend California and Arizona!

"Transparency and faith in the rule of law" are at issue here, Ellis says, noting that having her name on opinions keeps her "from going off the rails, because I have to do it publicly. Here, I think it is important that these officers and agents, at some point along the way, could be identified."

It's open enrollment time so here's a convenient peg to hang a little tutorial about how to choose your health insurance.

Most of the advice you get is bad. Most of your instincts are bad. I however used to work for a health insurance company and I do arithmetic for a living so I can help.
batmansrobyn.bsky.social
Personally I think it's great that my company's HR sends out an official looking tool where they even ask you to pre-populate your healthcare providers and instead of being the actual insurance enrollment process it's just some bullshit checklist to try and convince me I actually don't want a PPO

Heh, I totally thought of you as I was writing that thread. I knew you'd relate.

And that photo sounds terrifying. Colorado is really just like...this entire state full of the greatest trails in the world that incidentally will also try to murder you.

I love when you post stuff like this, and give us some insight into details on how weather events move and cause unexpected impacts. This isn't my area of expertise, but I always learn a little, and I really appreciate that.

Anyway. I'm not an expert in human behavior or anything. I'm just saying, if you're in a situation that calls for some level of expertise, and maybe there were some warning signs you passed a mile back, and maybe there are experts shouting at you?

Please. Listen to advice. Admit you might be wrong.

...and I know. I just described a lot of the people running this country right now. And other countries. And a lot of the people leading major tech companies. And editing our newspapers.

A whole lot of people are driving this world up Black Bear Pass in a rented Kia right now. It's a little scary.
nsqe.bsky.social
And this situation is emblematic of a problem that arises in so many other circumstances. Wild overconfidence untempered by any experience and capped off by a complete inability to listen to advice or admit any error...it's a /really/ toxic combination that gets people killed.

Apparently, a guy from South Carolina came out to Colorado, wanted to do some offroading on his vacation, rented a Kia, and stormed the wrong way up Black Bear Pass. Remember I said it was one-way? Remember I said there were warnings?

Locals told him to stop. Other drivers tried to intervene.
nsqe.bsky.social
I, an experienced offroad driver, have been driving off road for many years. I have owned a Jeep, a Bronco, a Rivian, and a 4Runner. I have driven (part of) the Rubicon. I help plan and lead group runs. I wouldn't do Black Bear.

(I know my limits, keep your condescension to yourselves)

..a set of extremely tight switchbacks that require multiple turns to get through. And those turns are on the edge of a cliff. And that edge is loose rock. If you screw up, it's a very long way down.

It is a one-way road. It is for experienced, prepared drivers only. There are many warning signs.
nsqe.bsky.social
If you don't know what Black Bear Pass is, lemme tell you.

Black Bear Pass is generally considered the most dangerous trail in Colorado & among the most dangerous trails in the US. It's a high mountain pass that leads down into the town of Telluride, and it's a very narrow, rocky shelf road with..
A very shiny white Kia Telluride dangles precariously on the edge of a crumbling shelf road, two tires barely on the edge held on by loose rocks, two tires (and most of the vehicle) well over the edge.
nsqe.bsky.social
Y'all somebody took a Kia up Black Bear Pass.

This will be a thread about the dangers of imagined competence. If you don't like heights, the next picture might make you nervous. Like, I don't have a problem with heights and it makes /me/ nervous!
