The Northumbria History Society is recruiting new members for the year ahead! Find their stall in the city campus Students' Union (in Escape).
A young woman sits at a stall, turned towards the camera and smiling. The desk in front of her has a purple tablecloth and is covered in society material and swag (stickers, Haribo, etc). Behind her is a panel with a large sign reading "History Society."

👩 Meet Linda Maraniss
⭐ In 1986, she visited Padre Island National Seashore, in Texas.
🏖️ She expected a beach.
🤢 She found a landfill.

(Ctnd) '... It is a strong example of what American Studies at its very best can do.'
nuamstudies.bsky.social
The judging panel commended it for placing 'the coastline in the middle of important conversations about race, class, economics, gender, the environment, and politics, while also offering an astute and wide-ranging commentary about the significance of beach culture more widely...' (ctnd)

Turns out French is an essential language for understanding the meanings and implications of the fires of Los Angeles.

Fortunately for those of us who read English, @elsadevienne.bsky.social has translated her brilliant book Sand Rush, which is also essential reading on LA's environmental history.

On the day of President Jimmy Carter's state funeral, Newcastle city leaders led tributes at the Civic Centre. The US flag was lowered to half-mast and a wreath was laid on the Jimmy Carter stone, commemorating his visit to Newcastle in 1977, the first by a sitting US president.
