In 2017 I started taking photos of books I've been reading: to keep a kind of record for myself and to celebrate books, authors, ideas, and pedestrian interaction with one's surroundings.

A definition of "anyone" a great many planners and road engineers go by, it seems.

Hagley Road's current design is an announcement that if you don't own a car in Birmimgham, you deserve neither safety nor dignity as you move around your city.

But some changes are planned that acknowledge that car owners aren't the only ones who might use this corridor.

Pedestrianize ICE streets!

This is what Democratic mayors should be doing to the streets in front of ICE facilities. Can't have a facility if no one can bring a car into it!

Just openly cheering the destruction of any representation of gay people in public space. They think their power is totally unrestricted, and the entire country will support them rolling back society to the 1950s, or maybe the 1850s

That we share this planet with people brave enough to join an unarmed flotilla attempting to get aid into Gaza but also with cowards as craven as these guys is really something of a wonder to behold.

ICE is not only chasing down every random brown person in Chicago, they have a cameraman following them to film this for social media. Cruelty and inhumanity as content.

It's impressive how quickly Paris has transformed car-dominant roads, prioritising more efficient modes of transportation. One lane for drivers on the right side, made to wallow in their own stop-and-start inefficiency, two giant lanes for bikes.

An adult driver angry at a child they hit with their car.

Our car culture summed up in one video.

Police in Airdrie, Alberta (just north of Calgary) say this driver hit a 17-year-old girl in a marked crosswalk, got out of the vehicle, and appeared to get upset at the teenager before driving away.

They released this video and are now trying to identify the driver.

Low speeds save lives; asking for higher speeds is a pro-death position, especially for your children and elderly family.
johnmunro.bsky.social
In light of the clear evidence that introducing reasonable speed limits means less people killed and seriously injured, politicians threatening to reverse these improvements should be worried about getting sued for knowingly putting people in harm's way.

Sure, but this might mean that those who possess the private property of cars might end up having to share some of the public space or our roads.

And surely such an infringement on liberty, just to improve safety and dignity for those who don't even own a car, must be prevented at all costs.

"The single most important behaviour, design or regulation for creating streets conducive to walking and cycling, was physical separation between the modes"

We've got a new study out, learning from a broad mixture of street users, planners and designers

www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
Highlights
For marginalised street users mode separation is the key to human-scale movement.
Streets conducive to walking and cycling have functional, safe and accessible design.
Professionals must approach street design, regulation and user behaviour holistically.
Combinations of influencing factors persuade people to either use or avoid a street.
There are no easy fixes to the public realm that will work for all non-drivers.

Brilliant effort from the Circle the City riders last night. 🌧💨 It was chucking it down and blowing a gale, but that didn’t stop them pedalling on. 💪

This is grim & dangerous over reach.

This is a government that have lost the moral argument & are still selling arms to Israel. Now further cracking down on dissent.

Absolutely the opposite of what they should be doing - so of course this is what the Labour Government choose.

WHOA: DHS says that their officers were “rammed and blocked in” in Chicago and got out of their cars and shot an U.S. citizen who reportedly also had a gun and who had been tracking ICE raids. They are blaming the shooting on her, and say they were already tracking her socials. More details to come.

This morning, during routine patrolling in Broadview, in the same area of Chicago that law enforcement were assaulted yesterday, our brave law enforcement officers were rammed by vehicles and boxed in by 10 cars.
Agents were unable to move their vehicles and exited the car. One of the drivers who rammed the law enforcement vehicle was armed with a semi-automatic weapon. Law enforcement was forced to deploy their weapons and fire defensive shots at an armed US citizen who drove herself to the hospital to get care for wounds.
The armed woman was named in a @CBP intelligence bulletin last week for doxing agents and posting online 'Hey to all my gang let's fuck those mother fuckers up, don't let them take anyone.' Thankfully, no law enforcement officers were seriously injured in this attack.
Pritzker's Chicago Police Department is leaving the shooting scene and refuses to assist us in securing the area. There is a growing crowd and we are deploying special operations to control the scene.
This is an evolving situation and we will give more information as soon as it becomes available.

How is this anything other than a police escort?

What conclusion can the people of Birmingham - including the great many of us feeling intimidated by the politics these particular flag deployments represent - draw here beyond police support for well-funded, xenophobic nationalism?

Flags went up in Stirchley a few days ago & were taken down by local residents the same evening.

The men returned with a cherry picker and coned off parts of the road with police accompanying them as they put up new flags along the High Street.

Residents who object have been met with verbal abuse.
