Flags went up in Stirchley a few days ago & were taken down by local residents the same evening.

The men returned with a cherry picker and coned off parts of the road with police accompanying them as they put up new flags along the High Street.

Residents who object have been met with verbal abuse.

Handsworth: The Colour Jenrick Couldn’t See
by Mukhtar Dar

“I didn’t see another white face.” With that single sentence, Robert Jenrick revealed not a truth about Handsworth, but the narrowness of his own imagination.

Handsworth is not divided, it’s Birmingham.

Our diversity isn’t a weakness, it’s our greatest strength. From Caribbean cafés to South Asian grocers and Eastern European shops, Handsworth represents the true face of Britain: proud, resilient, and beautifully diverse.

Birmingham will not be divided

The recent remarks by Robert Jenrick about 'seeing no white faces' in Handsworth are deeply irresponsible and reveal ore about his own worldview than about our city.

Once again, we are dragged back into tired debates about "integration", "Britishness" and who belongs, as if being non-white somehow makes you less British.

Handsworth has always been one of Birmingham's most diverse and multicultural communities, a place where people of every colour, faith and background live, work and trade side by side. To claim otherwise is not only inaccurate, but also designed to provoke division and resentment.

If Mr Jenrick had looked a little closer, he would have seen the vibrant Eastern European shops, the Caribbean cafes, the South Asian grocers and the faith spaces that make the Soho Road one of the most culturally rich streets in Britain.
Perhaps his "90-minute integration study", armed with a Dulux colour chart, missed that reality.

The truth is this: Handsworth is not a slum, It is one of Birmingham's treasures; a community that has stood tall through decades of struggle and change. Rather than being maligned, it should be celebrated and placed firmly on the city's cultural and tourism map. BRIG

Monday night's Pioneers Exhibition, launched by Birmingham Race Impact Group (BRIG) and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, reminded us of the generations who have faced down racism and defended our communities - people who have worked tirelessly to build the inclusive, resilient Birmingham we know today.

Their stories, captured on the Beyond Racism website show the real face of this city: proud, diverse and enduring.

Jagwant Johal, BRIG Founding Member said, "Birmingham has always been a city of welcome and resistance, a place where difference is not feared but celebrated. Handsworth, like so many of our neighbourhoods, is living proof that integration is not about exclusion. It's about mutual respect, shared struggle and collective belonging."

Handsworth and Birmingham will not tolerate attempts to sow division. We stand united as Brummies, as neighbours, and as people who know that our diversity is our greatest strength.

Zaytuna Community Masjid

PRESS RELEASE

Zaytuna Community Mosque Targeted in Hate Crime

On Sunday, Zaytuna Community Mosque at the Abrahamic Foundation in Birmingham was targeted in a malicious racist act of vandalism, causing significant damage to the exterior, including broken water lines and outdoor furniture.

An attack on a place of worship is an attack on the entire community. It has left our congregation especially our women, children and elders feeling hurt, fearful, and shaken. This shameful act, rooted in hate and racism, does not reflect the city we know and love. Our community feels vulnerable, because we are vulnerable, but remain steadfast in our mission to serve and bring people together.

We have reported the incident to police and are clear: this is a hate crime. It is part of a wider pattern of rising anti-Muslim hatred and violence, fuelled by divisive rhetoric and emboldened far-right extremism. This cannot become our new normal.

We urge everyone to stay vigilant and report anything suspicious. Our leadership is here to support anyone experiencing anxiety or distress.

Now is the time for action. We call on local authorities, elected officials, and civic leaders to step up: protect our places of worship, condemn this hatred without equivocation, and ensure a full investigation that leads to accountability and meaningful education to stop future radicalisation.

If you have information relevant to this investigation, please contact the police and quote the crime reference number: 4258,05/10/2025

Symbols matter. They shape who feels welcome in our streets. When flags are used as intimidation, they shrink belonging. My poster flips that script, uniting instead of dividing. In a city defined by diversity, this feels not only important, but urgent.

"This is a political movement, led by people who hate migrants. Elliott Stanley was part of the summer protests aimed at targeting migrants. What people like him refuse to accept is that many people do not hold with their political views & not everyone wants their neighbourhoods covered in flags."

So refreshing to see someone calling these shitrags what they are.

Any leader on the left needs the spine to fight back against the rags as they ramp up the smear machine. Zack has it, together with a solid media strategy that can counter their nonsense

OPPOSE NATLONALISM

A GROUP OF "SOUTH BIRMINGHAM LADS" HAVE STARTED A CAMPAIGN TO COVER OUR STREETS IN FLAGS, FROM BIRMINGHAM TO THE REST OF THE UK.

THEIR MOVEMENT IS GAINING STEAM.

FLAGS THAT REPRESENT A WRETCHED HISTORY OF IMPERIALIST AND COLONIAL WAR, GENOCIDE AND EXPLOITATION. A FLAG THAT EVEN TODAY STILL REPRESENTS A NATION THAT IS AIDING AND ABETTING A GENOCIDE OF THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE, AN ESCALATING WAR IN EUROPE, AND THE CONTINUED DESTRUCTION OF OUR PLANET.

THE ORGANISATION BEHIND THE RAISING OF THESE FLAGS DOES NOT TRY TO HIDE ITS POLITICAL TIES, PROUDLY DISPLAYING THEIR AFFECTION FOR FASCIST FIGUREHEADS SUCH AS CHARLIE KIRK, WHILST PUSHING RACIST, ANTI-MIGRANT SLOGANS LIKE "STOP THE BOATS". IT IS UP TO US TO OPPOSE THIS DISPLAY OF NATIONALISM FROM TAKING ROOT IN OUR COMMUNITIES.

FROM BIRMINGHAM AND BEYOND IT IS TIME TO RECLAIM OUR STREETS.

"IT IS OUR DUTY TO FIGHT FOR OUR FREEDOM. IT IS OUR DUTY TO WIN. WE MUST LOVE EACH OTHER AND SUPPORT EACH OTHER. WE HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE BUT OUR CHAINS.”
- ASSATA SHAKUR

RACIST. SEXIST, ANTI-GAY. RIGHT-WING BIGOTS GO AWAY!

Privileged to be at the launch of this exhibition celebrating the city's anti racism pioneers - many familiar to our building's community over the decades. Particularly in the face of sickeningly regressive racism from Robert Jenrick & others this week, this is affirming & well worth coming to see.

People like Elliot Stanley, the founding member of Raise The Colours would like you to believe that his 'movement' is not political. That's BS of course. It's about hating migrants.

“The flags are not political, just local people showing patriotism and pride in their area.”

No, the whole campaign is a giant exercise in astroturfing by the racist far-right.

This banner has just gone up at Longridge island. Can’t see it lasting long tbh.
