We are the New York state affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), fighting for the rights of all New Yorkers.
To Kristi Noem and your ICE goons: Your agency is dangerous, cruel, inept, and lawless, and has no place on our streets. Nothing makes that clearer than the blood you shed in Minneapolis yesterday.

New York’s longstanding sanctuary laws have made our city safer - and we will fight to protect them.

NEXT WEEK: Join the coalition to protect Raise the Age at rally next Wednesday on the steps of New York City Hall.

Before Raise the Age was implemented in 2018, young people were tried as adults — and violence was higher. Today, youth crime is down, and opportunity is up.

We won't go back.

Since his inauguration, Trump has abused executive power and endangered our civil liberties.

We will never stop fighting for our rights and defending our democracy.

1/ NEW: Gov. Hochul has signed the Shield 2.0 bill, which will protect repro + gender-affirming care providers who treat their patients despite the threats, as well as their patients, those seeking care, and those supporting them.

Access to health care is our right, and we will always fight for it.

BREAKING: Governor Hochul has vetoed the Freedom to Read Act.

At a time when right-wing extremists are trying to purge libraries nationwide, the Governor neglected to sign a bill that would have combatted censorship in NY and solidified students’ right to read free from viewpoint discrimination.

Schools should be havens where students can safely explore new ideas, read stories that reflect their lives, and take a look into other worlds.

The Freedom to Read Act will combat censorship in New York and solidify students’ right to read free. @governor.ny.gov must sign it into law, now.

George said it best: History has always been told by the oppressor, and book banning began when the oppressed started telling their stories.

We need the Freedom to Read so that young people feel seen, heard, and valued. Governor Hochul: Sign the bill, now.

We filed an amicus brief supporting New York City’s motion to toss out the Trump administration’s unlawful, undemocratic efforts to abolish NYC’s decades-old sanctuary policies.

We will never stop fighting to protect NYC's life-preserving sanctuary laws.

One year ago, Robert Brooks died after he was handcuffed and brutally assaulted by correction officers at Marcy Correctional.

No one should die in custody at the hands of corrections officers, who are charged with the safety and security of individuals in DOCCS’s facilities.

Today student activists, authors, educators, librarians, and activists against censorship rallied in Union Square in support of the Freedom to Read Act, a critical bill that is sitting on @governor.ny.gov’s desk.

Governor: Sign the bill without further delay.

We've received reports from women who were turned away from visiting their incarcerated loved ones because body scanners at NY prisons wrongfully identified their tampons as "contraband".

This is sex discrimination. DOCCS must right this wrong + immediately restore these women's visitation rights.

Before Raise the Age passed in 2017, NY was one of only two states charging all 16- and 17-year-olds as adults. We won’t go back.

Today we join 220+ orgs to protect this landmark law. Learn more: raisetheageny.org

During the 2022-23 school year, @penamerica.bsky.social documented 3,362 book banning incidents involving 1,557 books.

NY is not immune to these attacks, which is why we're calling on Gov. Hochul to sign the Freedom To Read Act ASAP. Join our read-in next week to support censorship-free education:

Did you know that parts of the U.S. Constitution were inspired by the Haudenosaunee Confederacy - one of the world's oldest participatory democracies?

This Native American Heritage Month we're uplifting the many contributions of Native and Indigenous leaders and communities.

NEW: We've filed a motion to unseal the Blackie’s warrant that ICE used to raid the Cato nutrition bar factory in upstate NY.

We're asking a federal judge to unseal these documents because we have concerns over the constitutionality of the warrant.

VICTORY: The court has ordered the release of our client Joel, a teenager with Special Immigrant Juvenile (SIJ) status, who was unlawfully detained by ICE last month.

While it’s a huge relief that Joel can finally go home, ICE should have never detained him in the first place.

Our volunteers were in Washington Heights (and all across Brooklyn and Queens) today to talk with our neighbors about how to protect themselves in potential interactions with ICE or the National Guard.

We keep each other safe. Hands off immigrants, and hands off NYC.

Last night we were at the Massapequa School Board meeting to speak out against their discriminatory - and illegal - bathroom ban.

All students have a right to safe, inclusive learning environments, and trans students are no different. We won't stop fighting.
