Hello lovely people! I’m Nashay (or Shay), a disabled queer artist working in paint, fiber, and digital media. My commissions are almost always open; just ask!
I’ll be watching the #LoriVallowDaybell Dateline interview…tomorrow, on Peacock, like most folks. What I will NOT do is trouble myself trying to apply logic or try to understand the word salad that will undoubtedly come out of her mouth. Therein lies madness.

I miss the shea butter neo-soul era so much. Those late 90s-early 2000s… just Black folks just loving on ourselves and each other with phenotypically Black sounds. Damn, it was a beautiful time to grow up in musically.

Will 2025 be the year I learn to use a sewing machine? As much as the closing of Joann Fabrics makes me sad, I’m kind of hoping to get a good machine for cheap, ngl.

I'm not a particularly confrontational person, but I'm seized by a desire to throttle every person I encounter loudly playing audio off their phone in public places.

Hanging out with @kristadedricklai.bsky.social and talking art was so fun! Krista practiced her sketching while I knit; it’s shawl knitting season!

i asked an art elder for reassurance recently, i said “what is the role of the black artist in times of fascism?”

he said: “to create a world for us to imagine and calculate through art.” for me, my task remains that simple.

Could I actually begin this piece this weekend? I am very much looking forward to it, but I’m nervous too. Each new work feels like a new adventure, with its own questions to answer, difficulties to overcome…and joys to embrace.

Siri, I don’t know why you think going from Alanis Morissette to Elton John in a random playlist is a thing…but I don’t hate it.

According to my Apple Watch, I slept over 9 hours last night. I damn sure don’t feel like it.

I’m learning to paint with gouache, a type of water-based paint most frequently described as “opaque watercolor”. It is that, I guess, but painting with it is NOT like painting with watercolor. It’s…definitely a thing unto itself, which is both annoying and invigorating.

History has always been a pendulum and always will be.

Many years from now, when the pendulum swings back and Mark Zuckerberg attempts to pretend he always supported LGBTQ rights, remember this moment. Sear it in your memory.

Never let him forget when he gave into hatred for his own preservation.

Fatigue, sore throat, swollen glands, tired eyes…ugh. I’ve made an appointment at the CVS Minute Clinic tomorrow, and yes, I’ll be asking for a COVID test.

Six of those tree shaped car air fresheners is just too much…too strong! I’m having no problems smelling them, in spite of my nasal congestion. Ugh, I don’t like it! #notetolyftdriver

This Uber driver is super chatty. 😐 I’m glad my mother is here to chat with him, because…he’s just so loud and animated! I can hear him and I’m wearing noise canceling headphones, with the ANC turned all the way up. Please quiet down, sir.

Today, the first snow day of 2025, was the perfect day to make cornbread and a big pot of soup…so I did. This soup was red lentils, butternut squash, carrot, onion, and red pepper. I wish I had more squash and carrot, but the lentils are delicious. Gotta adjust the spice levels a bit, though.

Happy New Year, everyone! My 2024 was quite…something. It was a year of adjustments, of trying to figure out what works… I had some health stuff that thankfully was not as serious as it could have been. Today, I’m thinking about the year’s highs, the lows, and am thankful for quiet times.

My brother just texted me to ask if I could cook some of the dishes for the Xmas dinner he and my sis-in-law are hosting. Meh. I was hoping I could just bring dessert.

Sometimes it’s fun to take a break from “serious Art” to do some doodles in my #BuJo. Still need to do something for the latter part of the year, then color these. Should I add something to April & May?

What are your thoughts on #NewYearsResolutions? Do you make them? Do you keep them? If so, how?

It's nuts that Paula Abdul spent an entire song describing small differences between her and her lover in Opposites Attract, but the fact she's an actual human female and he's a cartoon cat never gets mentioned
