Currently learning about suicide risk assessment and safety planning in primary care! Super exciting to hear that this intervention was found to be successful and particularly excited that means safety methods (eg locks) were provided as part of safety planning!

A new study shows how firearm suicides among women 65+ are rising, reversing decades of decline, while firearm suicides among older men remain high but stable. As these numbers grow, timely mental health support and conversations about firearm access are critical.

More personally, I'm grateful to LSU's student paper, The Reveille, for the opportunity to share my own origin story of seeing a friend thinking of suicide and having no idea what I could do to help them keep themself safe, because no one ever talked about suicide

Guest column: When someone you care about is thinking of suicide, know that you can help - Reveille
I was 16 years old and up late on a weeknight when Facebook pinged with a message from a school friend. Honestly, calling her a friend is probably unfair: we had been friends in freshman year before d...

So incredibly proud of the work @raymopt.bsky.social, @obrienemj.bsky.social, @faithstoneking.bsky.social, and the rest of LSU's Consortium for the Advancement of Suicide Prevention have done on campus and in our community for National Suicide Prevention Week/World Suicide Prevention Day.
Tips for Supporting Friends Who Are Thinking about Suicide

About 12% of young adults (almost 4,000 LSU students) have serious thoughts of suicide each year

What Can I Do?
- Break the silence. Start the conversation.
- If you're worried about your friend, you can ask if they are thinking about suicide
- Talk openly and directly about suicide
- Be warm, encouraging, supportive, and offer a listening ear
- Ask how you can support them; say, "I am here for you, how can I best support you?"

Who Can I Ask for Help?
- Did you know, you can call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988 (24/7) to talk to a counselor about suicide, and figure out how to help your friend?
- In an emergency, call 911

A practice I generally follow but want to make sure I bring into the next academic year: Every day, do one thing to better myself/my life (e.g., go for a run, do SOME writing), and one thing to better the life of someone else (e.g., compliment an outfit, make dinner for a friend who is struggling).
