I don't know who needs to hear this today, but our lab's new website comes equipped with a "Carc Gallery" (a collection of photos of salmon carcasses that died of natural causes, after spawning).

Not a new sketch but new to #sundayfishsketch. Design idea for a future linocut print “Salmon death cycle”
Four panel sketch of a decomposing salmon carcass and its scavengers (heron, fish, crayfish, bear)

Putting radio tags in those suckers was my entry into freshwater science! (Almost exactly 25 yrs ago.) We caught them by swimming over them and scooping them with a salmon dip net. Some migrated as far as from Troy, OR to Lewiston, ID

I own 2 copies of DS, so I won’t reply

Why am I so excited about COMPASS Pathfinders Program?

It's based on Wilburforce Fellowship in Conservation Science. I was in 2015 cohort. It was extraordinary -- I still benefit from the targeted training, generous network, & powerful collaboration.

Apply!

For reasons that don’t need elaboration, things have been unusually busy so if you’ve followed me recently and you’re a fisheries/climate impacts/aquatic biodiversity/etc acct and I haven’t followed back yet, thanks for your patience!

You have my attention. What’s the alternative? What’s the non slide rule thing you bring to this gunfight?

It is, thanks, those are good examples. And so many other things too, programs, safety networks, whole frigging systems that were not 100% efficient (nothing is) but worked more or less to provide for folks in so many ways

Introducing my first substack, Rising Rivers, where I explore the science and culture behind rivers and fisheries intended for non-academic audience. First article is "Abundant Rivers" with the thoughts on the role (and risks) of salmon hatcheries open.substack.com/pub/sethwhit...
Abundant Rivers
What role can hatcheries play in recovering harvestable salmon abundance while protecting wild populations?

@lizneeley.bsky.social I quoted your post but just now realized I called out the same quote as you - I jotted it down while listening to the interview! Fantastic interview, kudos to Ed, and looking forward to upcoming book

Listening to this now!

"Much of the world is hidden from us, that we don't perceive it and we don't understand it. And that it is worth understanding and it is necessary to understand."

The most achingly beautiful explanation of what science is, from @edyong209.bsky.social: “the idea that much of the world is hidden from us, that we don’t perceive it and don’t understand it, and that it is worth understanding and it is necessary to understand.”

I was always hoping there was a way to find the salmonid scientists on here easily. Now there is! Please comment to be added, it is (very) incomplete 🙏

I'm forever a fan of getting a nature fix, but I reject for the sole purpose of being more productive

"The boost to cognition lasted 30 minutes after leaving the natural setting, which may help you plan the best time for mentally demanding work."

Thanks, but I'll keep that 30 min for myself

The nature cure: how time outdoors transforms our memory, imagination and logic. Without engaging with natural environments, our brains cease to work well. Exposure to nature isn’t a luxury – it’s a necessity.

One day after the White House environmental justice website went dark, please join me in welcoming the father of environmental justice to Bluesky. Yes, sociologist @drrobertbullard.bsky.social literally defined the concept in his 1990 book, Dumping in Dixie: Race, Class and Environmental Quality.
