Things I learned today:

#BirdPhotography is hard but absolutely exhilarating, even when the subject is a humble #gull.

• Bird photography is very intimate. This guy and I connected on a level that can’t be put into words.

10/10 the best way to get your pants dirty.

I was lucky to catch some golden hour on a dog walk this afternoon.

As the sun suddenly broke winter grayness, folks poured outside: kids on scooters, couples, older folks, dog people like myself.

All complete strangers, united by the joy of being outside by the lake.

I was enchanted by those street lamps.

Taken on a quiet neighborhood dog walk today. This street is near the beach and is usually bustling with people. Which is probably why I never noticed those lanterns before.

Sometimes quiet is all we need to see.

This Sunburst Lichen is very aptly named: a tiny burst of color amidst December monochrome.

I just read that it’s resilient to human-induced air pollution, while many lichen species are sensitive to it. This is why it is common in urban areas and a good subject to study how species adapt.

Wishing everyone a peaceful holiday season.

I am planning to turn my phone off and instead spend some time reading, take my dog and my camera for a walk, and engage in other analog activities.

Hope you can find some joy offline as well.

La Berra, #Switzerland

Nothing like a day out there, on a hiking trail, amongst snowy tops and away from infinite scrolls.

The internet is telling me that this little friend is called the Scurfy Twiglet and I just love the name.

Despite its small size (this one is 3 tall), it does a big job of helping decompose woody debris and releasing nutrients back into the soil, enriching ecosystems.

Things I saw on a dog walk today.

(Yes, I am very fortunate to be temporarily based in a country where a daily dog walk is like being inside some damn pretty postcard).

Every time I am in the mountains, I am reminded that cities and their man-made worlds are not where true beauty is.

We live on an astonishingly beautiful planet and yet we are keen on destroying it, just to make a few rich people richer.

There must be an other way.

So much to be grateful for, despite the relentless cycle of bad news this year. One of those things is ability to spend some time in the nature and in the mountains this year.

Nothing compares to a walk along a snowy path in a hushed forest.

A gentle reminder that we need natural world more than it needs us and we are destroying it at an unprecedented pace.

Another glorious day in the mountains. Winter undeniably here.

Nothing compares to the calm and clarity of mind I feel in the mountains. The world feels hellbent on making us lose ourselves in anger and defeat. Find your place of calm as a matter of resistance.

Nothing like a hike in high altitudes to regain the perspective. The human race is busy destroying the natural world, but we’ll be gone due to own destruction, and these giants will still be standing.

Shot on my old #Sony a6000 with 35mm/F1.8 - my fave lens.

Nothing so healing as a trek through the high alpine landscape, where the monochrome of snow-clad mountain slopes is interrupted by the fiery orange of turning larch trees.

I never expected that one day I will embrace the arduous high mountain hiking. It’s sweat, tears, and absolute happiness.

A question I ask myself everyday: if you are born in a country of stunning natural beauty, do you ever get used to it to the point of taking it for granted?

I am new here and gasp every time I see the peaks behind the most mundane of cityscapes.

I am at 52% and I cannot put it down. Deeply researched and so well written. I love it when a book keeps me up at night, when it’s “just one more page” until an accidentally look at the clock tells me it’s past midnight on a school night.

@juliaioffe.bsky.social what a great gift to us readers!

Obscene. We need to return 90% and higher marginal income tax rate for the ultra rich, and invest in universal healthcare, education, social and food security and all other beautiful things that make life better for everyone.

As a city kid, I know so little of life around me. I started taking pictures of common plants so I know their names.

Meet common sainfoin, a hard worker: feeds bees and butterflies; fixes nitrogen and improves soil, and great for grazing (if you’re a cow).

Say hi when you see one in your hood.
