Another of the 7 orchid Wonders of Dorset - the Colossuses next to a Road! These huge hybrid Dactylorhiza x grandis have formed impressive clumps. I counted 16 spikes on a couple of plants. #orchid @bsbibotany.bsky.social

Early Purple orchids today - these are slightly unusual in that they grow in the open, well away from woodland.

Starting off the 2025 orchid season with 5 lovely giant orchids coming into flower somewhere in the UK. There were 13 plants in total, including many non-flowering rosettes.
Unlike many rare orchids, this one was also very very beautiful

Though their name is a somewhat inaccurate description of their habit, Pyramidal Orchids (Anacamptis pyramidalis) are exceptionally beautiful. Lucky to have a very large colony in Dorset with some luscious colour variations (chunky plants too!).

Giant Orchids Himantoglossum robertianum in Oxfordshire this morning. A fortnight on from my previous visit and things have only moved on slightly: several in full flower in late February 2024! Anyway, let the orchids commence! @bsbibotany.bsky.social @ukorchids.bsky.social

How long until the first Early Spider Orchids open on the Purbecks in Dorset? In 2024 it was mid-March. On the 16th I saw my first one - around 5cm high - in the golden morning sun. I found a more advanced one a few hours later. My hunch is they'll be a week later in 2025.

Early Spider Orchid (Ophrys spegodes). First blooms could be open in around 5 to 6 weeks weather depending. Nationally scarce in the UK, I'm fortunate to live not too far from the mega-colony on the Purbeck coast in Dorset. More info on ALT of first image.

Dorset boasts a very nice range of forms of Bee Orchid (Ophrys apifera). A day out in late May 2024 was my best day ever for this iconic species. Hoping for a similar display in 2025! More info on the different forms on the ALT button...

I'm not sure I've got the hang of this new Bluesky thing. I replied to your orchid post yesterday @mattberry but now I can't see your post, just my reply. What am I doing wrong?
