He’s just stealing from The Culture series again. He’s describing a slap-drone. The Culture is an ambiguous utopia, Star Trek on steroids. Hyper intelligent AI minds keep humans almost as pets and assign intelligent machines to manage problematic individuals.

No time like the present to get serious about building a better world out of the rotting carcass of the old.

Two foci, compost the old, fertilize the new.

Do something that puts a little good into the world on a dark day and then keep doing it.

Remaking the world is an embodied practice.

Only Frank Herbert can make fascism a good thing while being utterly subversive. The funny thing about the right wing adopting the God Emperor as a symbol is that they want to be him. They clearly don't get it. The fascist leader experiences fear, death, or utter boredom. Only fools seek such ends.
42 Years Ago, 'Dune' Went Off The Rails — And Became More Subversive Than Ever
In May, 1981, Frank Herbert's novel 'God Emperor of Dune,' dropped and changed the 'Dune' series forever.

Fascist thinking is creeping into silicon valley wrapped in a science fiction tale narrating the power of artificial intelligence
Silicon Valley Confronts the Idea That the ‘Singularity’ Is Here
The frenzy over artificial intelligence may be ushering in the long-awaited moment when technology goes wild. Or maybe it’s the hype that is out of control.

With Folded Hands by Jack Williamson (1947)

I don't know what it is about this story, maybe the way the narrative zooms out and back in, but I will never forget the sense of wonder the first time I read it.

The always excellent @adapalmer.bsky.social on progress (apparently Frank Bacon invented it!).

But Ada, if you're listening, did Thomas Hobbes learn of the sometimes terrible consequences of progress or was he a terrible consequence of progress?!

Frank Herbert and David Wingrove talk about a variety of topics including the importance of a shared set of ideas (the SF megatext) being put forward by the (for Herbert) banal Star Wars (then recently released)
