If anyone is curious, my wife is amazing. We found some plans for this helmet on Etsy and she made it out of cardboard from an IKEA box. Then, per the kid’s request, she then painted it silver and painted some blue flames on it. He absolutely loves it and has been playing with it all month.

Unfortunately, it was rainy tonight, so he went Trick or Treating sans helmet and in a poncho.

I changed into my Luigi costume to hand out candy, since my dev “costume” didn’t make sense out of context. I took the Mario Galaxy picture…then remembered that’s better docked and played Pokemon instead.

At some point, my wife said “Wouldn’t it be funny if I was his Ghost…but dressed as the wrong kind of ghost?” Then we asked “But what should David be?” The kid was like “What if you wear a dev shirt and be a Destiny dev?” The dev team shirts are pretty subtle, so I wore a Bungie logo shirt instead.

Literally all year, the kid has been saying “I want to be Destiny Warlock for Halloween!” We assumed he would change his mind at some point, but he was consistent!

Continuing with this theme, the kid brought this home yesterday. His class made Halloween cards at school and he drew this.

Six years ago today, I started at @bungie.net . I won’t summarize everything like I did last year, but a lot has changed in the past year. The biggest thing, for me at least, is that I have a new role. As of July, I’m now the Engineering Lead for the Data Reliability Engineering team!

When I pick the kid up from after school care, he usually shows me stuff he’s drawn while there. Lately it’s been a lot of K Pop Demon Hunters stuff.

On Wednesday, he showed me this. He was trying to draw my Starfire Protocol Warlock from memory! And he did a remarkably good job too!

I’ve discovered that I’m horrible at social media. I often think of something I want to post, but then write it, rewrite it, and edit it for so long that I either just forget to post it and/or it’s no longer relevant.

So anyway, I had a blast at the Math Class 10th Anniversary event last weekend!

During lockdown, she made him kelp cakes and fish biscuits from his then-favorite TV show, Octonauts. They were mini pineapple upside down cakes decorated to look like the kelp cakes and goldfish crackers. He was turning three that year and absolutely *loved* it!

Here are some of my favorites from years past.

For his pirate party (think a cross between @seaofthieves.com and Jake and the Neverland Pirates), she made pirate islands and buried treasure cupcakes.

For his Mario party, she made Bowser shell cupcakes and a fire flower veggie tray.
Pirate island cupcakes. They are iced blue and have cookie crumble sand for an island and red twizzler pieces mark an X for the buried treasure on the island. Buried treasure chest cupcakes. They are iced with chocolate fudge and topped with a variety of gold and silver sprinkles, to look like an open treasure chest. Bowser shell cupcakes. They are iced bright green with white sugar rim. Inside are orange icing dots with white chocolate chips for the spikes on Bowser’s shell. A fireflower veggie tray. The stem is sliced cucumbers with broccoli leaves. The flower itself is red cherry tomatoes, around orange baby carrots, around yellow bell pepper slices, around white cauliflower.

Today was the kid’s 7th birthday party and my wife continued her tradition of baking and decorating cupcakes for him. This year, he wanted a @seaofthieves.com party, since it’s his favorite game. He particularly likes Megalodons, so she made vanilla megalodon cupcakes and chocolate kraken cupcakes.

I did finally roll credits and my goodness what an amazing experience that was! It’s a solid 9/10 game all the way through, but that last quarter or so takes it up to a 15/10 or better!

Seriously, go play this game if you can!!!

Now to dive into the postgame and collect the remaining ~100 bananas!

I just spent the last 20 minutes or so looking for any public facing information on approved remote states...and the best I could find was a tweet from 2022 with this picture.

You know, I’m really thankful that Edge of Fate can’t be spoiled for me…because I can’t stop playing Donkey Kong Bananza!

This game has no right to be as good or as fun as it is! I didn’t expect to enjoy it this much, but it’s essentially Super Mario Odyssey with a fully destructible environment.

It was also pointed out to me that I had surprisingly decent damage here! I guess that makes up for the goofy Sanguine Alchemy look that I loadout swapped to (and is present in the screenshots).

Right as I got to the front of the line, Best Buy’s system crashed and they couldn’t process payments. Preorders were fine, so I was able to pick it up no problem. But folks in line to buy it were being asked to wait with no ETA. They have plenty in stock and just can’t sell them.
