This is one of the new 'side road entry treatments' on Banbury Road (at St Margaret's Road).

It's a beautifully level invitation to pedestrians ... and a beautifully unmarked invitation to drivers 🤷

Two pilot “mobility hubs” are proposed in Carterton and Benson by Oxfordshire County Council. The projects include improved bus stops, covered bike lockers, widened pavements, and better pavement crossings over side-roads. A consultation is now open.

Hi @npr.org! We worked late tonight putting together this handy pocket guide!

It doesn't address road design issues, but if we're going to educate road users, we should include drivers.

It's the size of a folded business card. Print it, fold it, put it in your wallet!
"How Do You Avoid Hitting People With Your Car" pocket guide. Instructs readers to Watch the Road and Slow Down. Further text humorously insists that watching the road and slowing down are indeed important.

'It is not helpful to either of us to have pedestrians and cyclists in conflict over the small amount of space accorded to both groups.'

Letter in today's Oxford Times from OxPA chair Sushila Dhall
Sharing space

OXFORD Pedestrians Association stands by the statistics quoted in your letter from Robin Tucker of Oxfordshire Cycling Network - and whilst our members have tried to get e-scooter parking removed from pavements, and have tried to keep Cornmarket and Queen Street free for pedestrians between 10am and 6pm, we also recognise that cyclists and pedestrians have a lot more in common than is often recognised.

Both types of vulnerable road users suffer from a lack of space on roads, compromised safety when sharing spaces with motorised traffic, polluted air when travelling, and both tend to suffer from collisions with motorised vehicles in which both pedestrians and cyclists come off much worse than drivers.

We need to continue to work together to tackle these issues - it is not helpful to either of us to have pedestrians and cyclists in conflict over the small amount of space accorded to both groups.

Pedestrians who? I’ll be just a minute. They can wait, or walk around me! Don’t they know I’m more important?! #antisocialparking - a daily sight at Iffley/Howard. Could we get some bollards, please?!

I urge everyone in Oxfordshire (or who uses our rail systems) to reply to this consultation on the 2040 plans for rail. I've talked about how improving cycling connectivity up to our stations could be transformative for rail travel AND local communities (1/2)

This is good news for pedestrians: bike racks to be installed in the road rather than taking away pavement space.

Please support the consultation at letstalk.oxfordshire.gov.uk/oxford_cycle...

Car parking spaces across Oxford could be replaced with bike parking under proposals from the City and County councils. Seven parking bays have been identified as locations for new on-carriageway bike racks.

The evening shift has arrived. These junctions must never be clear. It’s a tough schedule but there are always dedicated local drivers doing what has to be done in the name of the antisocial parking movement.

Pedestrians? Not my problem. Look, not my fault the Victorians built this terrace without a decent size drive!

I recently spoke in Parliament about the impact of pavement parking—a concern I hear often from constituents with disabilities, sight loss or mobility aids.
It makes everyday journeys harder and more dangerous. Councils need proper powers to act.

Campaigners are seeking statements from anyone who has walked Electric Road, the path from Osney Mead to South Hinksey. The path is not yet formally a public right of way, meaning access could be withdrawn at any time; the campaign aims to apply for it to become one.

Excited that safe crossing works are going to start in my division on Howard St on the 29th September (for 5 days) to make the "flower lane" crossing safer. Not yet sure about cyclist / pedestrian access, more info to come, but I'll try to avoid it by going Charles / Catherine as it's helpful.

Oxford's Congestion Charge approved at Cabinet today!

I think this is the first UK one for 20 years - London and Durham being the other two cities with them. Looking forward to faster buses and more bus routes, fewer private cars and therefore being able to re-do crossings to favour pedestrians!

Oxford is to get a congestion charge of £5 per car per day, starting this autumn. Charges will be levied for driving past one of six camera sites. The decision, intended to accelerate bus services and encourage cycling/walking, was taken at an Oxfordshire County Council cabinet meeting this morning.

The meeting was told that reducing congestion could allow new pedestrian crossings to be introduced at key junctions around the city. Cabinet members said the charge would help “the many families who cannot afford a car and are wholly reliant on buses”.

Patrick Lingwood, Oxford Pedestrians’ Association: “80% of Oxford residents walk at least weekly, often on narrow footways along traffic jams. We wholeheartedly support the introduction of the charge. But your plans to only subsidise Park & Ride do nothing for pedestrians.”

We challenge @anneliesedoddsmp.bsky.social to condemn #PavementParking.

The poll quoted in this Oxford Mail article shows that a ban would be a vote-winner!

The pedestrian and cycle zone on Market Street, outside the Covered Market, has been made permanent. Since April 2024, motor vehicles have been banned as a trial, except for deliveries, taxis and Blue Badge holders. The scheme was signed off as permanent at a council meeting on Thursday.

The new railway bridge walkway on the north side of Botley Road has opened, just hitting the “end of August” deadline. The route will eventually be a 4m-wide path with space for pedestrians and cyclists, but for now cyclists are still being asked to dismount.
The new path by the station. We're not entirely convinced this is 4m wide but we'll have to return with a tape measure to find out…
