Wassily Kandinsky was an avant-garde/surrealist artist who was famously targeted by the Nazis while faculty at Bauhaus, having his art and the school labeled as "degenerate art". What's perhaps more interesting is he could see sounds due to synesthesia (like me!) and painted that. More in alt 📝

This painting is approximately displaying what is seen by those with synesthesia when listening to music. My personal experience is closer to stage light gel color filters or low opacity Photoshop layers with various translucent moving colored shapes. Very loud sounds or music can be so visually overwhelming that it becomes hard to see 😮

The painting Three Sounds by Wassily Kandinsky.

Various colored shapes are collected into patterns across the dark canvas with a large light crystal-shaped area offset from center that holds the majority of the details. An earlier example of his work, the scene comes together to look like a starry night above pine trees utilizing a wide range of colors to depict variations in sound tones.

The experience of synesthesia is an interesting one because the tie between sound and color is not only one way. Looking at his work I am able to kind of almost "hear" the music based on shapes and colors matching what I experience from music normally.

Bit of art history..
Van Gogh is known for his periods of tenuous mental health, but he was also just a coffee addict who lived in a small town in southern France and was a friendly curiosity to the local kids. More in alt text 📝

The painting The Yellow House by Van Gogh. It depicts a daytime summer street view of the house on the street in Arles in southern France where he lived and worked. On the right side of the painting is the start of wheat fields, famously the setting of his final painting Apple aptly named Wheat Field With Crows which was finished shortly before his death.

Van Gogh rented between 4-6 rooms in this house depending on the year, ground floor rooms for a work studio and upstairs as a living space. The fields are where he spent quite a bit of time, as did the children he included in the field in the painting. He was known to play along with them as they played bandits and would take long walks through the fields.

The painting Cafe Terrace at Night by Van Gogh. It depicts an outdoor scene at night with mostly empty tables and chairs set outside of the cafe, engulfed in the warm glow of the cafe lights. A few townspeople are walking down the street in the distance, somewhat obscured by the night.

Located in Arles not far from the yellow house he lived in, Café Le Soir was one of his favorite places to consume an absolutely unhinged amount of coffee. At times when he was unable to afford food, he would subsist almost entirely on caffeine.

Painted one year before Starry Night, you can see the way that he would later capture the night sky start to take shape above the city street's glow.

This cafe is still around today :)
