Maybe this isn’t why they chose Machado, but terms of American politics, she’s an ideal choice. Republican petulant spite at the winner will be dampened, but it is also a clear statement for democracy and against dictatorship.

Isn't she? It doesn't explicitly state anywhere that she's AFAB. And even if she were, it's still a very relevant exploration of gender presentation and the narrative is one of 'people are who they tell you they are', so my point stands.

I say this with the bluntness it requires: they will get people murdered if this continues. This is not just populism anymore either: it’s completely unhinged and a deliberate choice that does endanger lives. I am not saying this lightly at all.
