🚨Brilliant song🎶🎙️🎸🥁 & Brilliant read📚🚨

An underdog anthem as catchy as anything REM ever conjured, Los Lobos' “Will The Wolf Survive?” reimagines the western morality plays of Townes Van Zandt through the lens of an escalating war on immigration. Maybe the most prescient song written about America during the 1980’s. Waylon sings it too.

First time I read that Fairport Convention was a big early influence I was surprised, but I thought about it & realized I shouldn’t have been: Folk & rock, virtuoso guitar, & superb lyrics.

Their cover of Richard & Linda Thompson’s Down Where The Drunkards Roll is brilliant.

One of the biggest Rock & Roll Hall of Fame omissions if you put any stock in that place.

Even hearing “Will The Wolf Survive” as a dopey teenager, when lyrics meant next to nothing to me, this song felt haunted and important. I came for the guitar, stayed for everything else.

I was in the sociology department! I went because they gave me a full scholarship, which was the only way I could afford grad school. Quite a culture shock for this Long Islander, but saw tons of great shows! I was a little too young to ever see the Replacements, but that must have been AMAZING!

"The Euros win and win with flair. They win there; they win here. Brimming with suave European sophistication, they make rubes of us. Somehow, this has got to stop." Over at The Ringer, I wrote about eight ways the U.S. Ryder Cup team can cease the bleeding. www.theringer.com/2025/10/06/g...

Decades of football geniuses: "Punting is a weapon."

Now: "Yes, and it's not loaded."

On some days, I think the progressive permissiveness of NFL teams regularly going for it on 4th and short might represent the single greatest counter cultural achievement of my generation. A righteous struggle. It's uncomfortable to reckon with how many 80's games were ruined by unnecessary punting.

Incredulous, but not notably bitter. He seems like a pretty good sport.

The most endearing thing about "Pinball Wizard" is that it's written and sung from the point of view of the previous pinball champion, who's genuinely incredulous that he has been usurped by someone deaf, dumb and blind. So silly and moving. If we didn't have Pete Townshend, we'd have to invent him.
