“Let Republicans have the literal blood of American citizens on their hands—and make that the central issue of the shutdown. Otherwise, enjoy having your health care subsidy debate in the gulags these people would happily send us all to. I hear that poll-tests great.”
The Case for the Forever Shutdown
Senate Democrats actually allowing the GOP to stop funding the government is only the first step. Now they have to make the case that Trump’s government is illegitimate.

In order for the United States to become a party to the International Criminal Court and have our officials be subject to trial at The Hague, the US Senate would need to ratify the Rome statute by a two-thirds vote. Let’s start running on that.

I don't think we'll ever get another sentence which sums up everything the New York Times embodies quite like "Some legal experts have called it a crime to summarily kill civilians".
mattcameron.bsky.social
hey @nytimes.com: there is no counterpoint here. There are no credible legal experts who would EVER say that the US military has any right or authority to blow civilian craft out of the Caribbean and kill their crews from afar without any provocation. There is no other side to this question.
"Some legal experts have called it a crime to summarily kill civilians not directly taking part in hostilities, even if they are believed to be smuggling drugs."

"All throughout Twilight Override, there is a feeling of grasping and tumbling and reassessment. It’s a stemwinding and treacherous trip. At times it can feel like he’s trying to break our heads." Over at Pitchfork, I wrote about the tremendous new LP from Jeff Tweedy. pitchfork.com/reviews/albu...

Dear friends,
As have become a habit, I mark each #autumnequinox by sharing a small poem by Xin Qiji. I also start my translation cycle of Chinese and Japanese poems and prose that mark the twenty-four lunisolar micro-seasons. Translation notes blogged here:

Happy birthday to Bruce Springsteen, the daring depictor of the shadow world of tenement work and the still more corrupt onset of the new oligarchies. Here's a piece I wrote over at the Ringer about the airline strikes of 1981 and the 40th anniversary of 'Nebraska'. www.theringer.com/2022/12/14/m...
Please Don’t Stop Me: 40 Years of Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Nebraska’
Decades after its release, the haunted highways and haunted characters of the Boss’s largely acoustic masterpiece still haunt the American psyche

It is the job of the Democratic party to sell and defend the policies that most Democratic voters want, not to present a candidate slate that is palatable to moderate Republicans who might switch if they hate their own candidate enough.
