Interested in genetics & attitudes to climate change. Once did research - now teach mostly. Trying to figure out what to do here. Serious science stuff or bad cartoons? https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=9aCZK5sAAAAJ&hl=en

Thinking that there should be a new academic journal,

"How I should have done my study, given what I know now."

Perhaps it already exists. It would be a good read.

Just came across this climate change video. "Earth, the operators manual"

The bits I watched are superb- engaging & clear.

Its very real.

She really didn't like Musk, Trump Netanyahu & suggested they should all be put on one of Musks rockets.

Talked about the rise of the far right now is the worst time she has lived in since Hitler.

It is really worth watching this moving interview with Jane Goodall on Netflix.

Among many other things, a call for everyone not to give up in the fight to protect biodiversity and act on climate change.

A question where everyone has an opinion & few intermediate views.

I'd be interested to see if there are real studies on this.

“If we continue, however, with the policies that we have out there, we are clearly on a pathway now of 2.7 degrees or 3 degrees where adaptation is simply not doable anymore. This is just what it is. We cannot protect Amsterdam from sea level rise of 3m. This is just not doable,” Thallinger said.
Why insurers worry the world could soon become uninsurable
Günther Thallinger, a board member at Allianz, one of the world's biggest insurers, says the climate crisis could make adaptation economically unviable.

This is how these diagrams are usually presented.

Looks good (arguably better), but much less clear; I never really understood what was going on.

I prefer the new simplified linear version.

How people are changing the life-support systems of our planet.

Mostly bad.

Yesterday, I was debating whether to take this gene out of my genetics computer workshop.

I guess I'll keep it in.

I don't really agree with this.

In 10 years' time, Twitter will probably still exist, so the end result of climate experts/communicators leaving may be that even fewer people will know about how climate change may impact our planet.

It's yelling into the void but something tell me it just needs to kept being said: if you are still posting, RTing, or lurking on X, you are helping keep users there and you are helping this guy pull in advertising revenue.

But then the info people need is simply not there.

It would seem near impossible to figure out what global warming has in store for a kid born this year in the 🇬🇧, & who lives till 90 (2115) & say we hit about 3C warming in 2100.

Even just for what a bad heatwave might look like.
patbhamilton.bsky.social
Now, in the 🇬🇧, ~25% think that "the threat of global warming is not as real as many scientists have said."

Steady increase in the last 5 years - from around 15%.

62% say the threat is 'every bit as real.

2 for 1!

I found this one of the most striking results from your questions. A similar question was used in 2025 study; 55% in the UK thought that cutting emissions by 1/2 would stop warming.

The other interesting one in yours was the 63% that thought the planet had already warmed by 3 degrees C
patbhamilton.bsky.social
A propper study:

Hayhoe et al. found that 62% of elementary school teachers sampled thought that if the world reduced the rate of carbon emissions by 30%, the earth would cool.

Last week, a BBC radio news report on an extreme weather event (can't remember which) ended with a throw-away comment like this,

"we can expect more extreme weather like this until greenhouse gas emissions are reduced."

Does anyone see a problem with this?

patbhamilton.bsky.social
It was my thought. It may seem like a small mishap, but it could result or reinforce this misconception in the public

Earlier in the week, I had been discussing with someone about if we should expect medical students to have firm knowledge of the fundamentals of climate change science like this.

I suppose you could point to, that greenhousegas should be completely eliminated, until then, things will become worse, more extreme. With net-zero, thing will be "like this" until negative emissions.
