Excited to share our work at @natcomms.nature.com

We used single cell proteomics to define the functional heterogeneity of human neutrophils in glioblastoma, finding pro and anti-tumorigenic effector states invisible to scRNAseq.

SCP will revolutionise immunology, this is just the start

New study (Walmsley lab) has for the first time, found the set of proteins neutrophils express within a tumour at high detail. This tech has opened the door to understanding neutrophil roles in brain tumours such as glioblastoma but also more generally in health and disease states.

How low blood oxygen can affect your body's immune defences 🛡️

A new study reveals that neutrophils have their genetic material modified by hypoxia and how the BCG vaccine may reverse this immune response.

Our most recent work entitled “Hypoxia induces histone clipping and H3K4me3 loss in neutrophil progenitors resulting in long-term impairment of neutrophil immunity” is now published. Well done @mas-g.bsky.social. rdcu.be/eM5MT
Hypoxia induces histone clipping and H3K4me3 loss in neutrophil progenitors resulting in long-term impairment of neutrophil immunity
Nature Immunology - Walmsley and colleagues report that systemic hypoxia induces persistent loss of histone H3K4me3 marks and epigenetic reprogramming in neutrophil progenitors, resulting in...

Students celebrate their IRR internship 🧑‍🔬

For four weeks this summer, IRR hosted local high school students as part of both the Edinburgh BioQuarter’s Summer Interns and @edinburgh-uni.bsky.social’s Career Ready programmes.

Super proud that my PhD paper is finally out! doi.org/10.1111/all.... RSV leaves long-lasting marks on the lung, potentially boosting future immune responses but also contributing to allergen sensitisation.
Epithelial Memory After Respiratory Viral Infection in Mice Results in Prolonged Enhancement of Antigen Presentation
RSV infection induces lasting epigenetic and transcriptional changes in LECs, upregulating MHC-I and MHC-II, further amplified by LPS exposure. This is accompanied by increased antigen uptake, proc...

Happy to share our latest preprint doing low cell number (mini-bulk) and single cell #proteomics on tumour associated neutrophils from human glioblastoma where we find multiple functional states that would be invisible to scRNAseq, some showing pro-tumoural states with potential therapeutic value
Single cell proteomic analysis defines discrete neutrophil functional states in human glioblastoma
Neutrophils are vital innate immune cells shown to infiltrate glioblastomas, however we currently lack the molecular understanding of their functional states within the tumour niche. Neutrophils are k...
