"There have been 29 cases involving deportations from the UK heard by the Strasbourg court since 1980 and the UK has won 16 of them. None of the 13 defeats has been in the past five years" - @davidgauke.bsky.social in @thetimes.com 👇

Leaving the ECHR won’t fix illegal migration
Half-baked tales of rulings turning on chicken nuggets are no basis for cutting Britain adrift

Reform pushes for 85% migrant population certainly is a new direction for the party.

The UAE is an authoritarian autocracy, a petro-state with no income tax for citizens, to bribe them for the lack of democratic voice or free speech

It is 85% migrant, a segregated society with a ban on integration in principle and practice, few rights, equal opportunities, nor voice for incomers

Yes, but as the person who started organising these fringes when they had a purpose, I don't see the point now

Not cool. I often wonder why so many academics do it and why the universities that employ them are so blase about it, but a national broadcaster... 🤯

I'm not suggesting it as a strategy. It's also unlikely the party would shrink to anything less than 25 MPs in any scenario. If everyone bar the One Nation and fiscal Conservatives MPs defected, it could even see its fortunes change
patricklohlein.bsky.social
The Conservatives aren't disappearing. Their parliamentary numbers could shrink to Plaid Cymry levels, but unless all local government and the House of Lords disappears, the party will survive
patricklohlein.bsky.social
So disappointing. I'm starting to think that it'll be easier to get the LibDems into economic liberalism than the Conservatives back into fiscal conservatism

Neither have I. I tried once or twice, but it was dire

Good idea. Few have heard of the OECD, let alone know what it does. This would drag it into the national conversation and give it the higher profile it deserves.

One of my favourite fun facts is that other parts of the world jealously look at how the UK has been so successful at attracting international migration

I don't really think people grasp the extent of the demographic crisis. A fertility rate is 1.5 as the UK, France etc, each generation is 25% smaller without immigration. If it's 1, as it is in several countries in Asia, South America and Europe each generation is less than half the size

You can't tariff everything. But you sure can try.

And while it's very entertaining for us trade wonks, it leads to anxiety and uncertainty for the industry. As in even more anxiety and uncertainty.
patricklohlein.bsky.social
... and anxiety and uncertainty lead to restraint, delays, and diversion of sales, purchases, and investment. This had never been a great recipe for growth and prosperity (also. c.f. Brexit)

Whoever is on The Times picture + social media account is reinforcing public misunderstanding of immigration, by using pictures of asylum seekers in boats to discuss the big rise in visa immigration of 2021-24

Tough new conditions to be imposed on migrants who want to settle in the UK will not apply to more than a million people who arrived in the UK under the post-Brexit immigration surge
Labour’s tough new rules will not apply to migrants already in UK
