ICA 2027 to be held in Glasgow rather than in Chicago as originally planned. Really the only move in a climate that jeopardizes every part of the conference's acronym - international, communication, and association.

12 years ago this day, I defended my Master's thesis at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora, Brazil. Little did I know then that my relationship with academic research would take me to where I am today.

Mark Zuckerberg's commitment to free speech and civic engagement runs precisely as deep as Exxon's commitment to clean energy.

He doesn't have a single intellectual commitment that could remain standing against a mild political headwind.

NEW: Platformer has obtained the dehumanizing new guidelines moderating what people can now say about trans people on Facebook and Instagram. Employees tell me these changes are likely to inspire more violence against LGBT people: www.platformer.news/meta-new-tra...

Ha! Yes, back to the roots

Even more problematic that studying what happens in these platforms at scale is virtually impossible…

Which, unlike the end of the factchecking program, are not restricted to the US. Instead, prior community guidelines on discriminatory, hateful, and dehumanizing speech will be loosened globally (except in countries where local regulation outlaw this kind of speech).

It’s important to consider the consequences of online abuse on political representation in light of the changes in meta’s moderation approach allowing more abuse and harassment to stay online.

It’s important to identify *which* speech is being “suppressed”

Under Meta's newly relaxed moderation policies, women can be compared to household objects, ethnic groups can be called "filth," users can call for the exclusion of gay people from certain professions and people can refer to a transgender or non-binary person as an "it."
Meta's new content policies will let many groups be targeted
Changes in moderation will release a flood of hate speech and could even fuel real-world violence, experts say.

Meta's decision to ditch fact-checkers in the US reeks of dangerous opportunism, prioritizing 'community-driven' spin over accountability. With Indian fact-checkers heavily reliant on Meta funding, this could spell disaster for truth & transparency globally.
