FWIW - this is how food prices spiked in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and how the cost of essentials is spiking again now.

People have been flagging the multiple crises of climate change, geopolitical tension and inequality for years now. Politicians cannot claim they were not warned. Will there be a 911 moment?. And is our democracy strong enough to see off another crisis?

🚨NEW PAPER🚨
We all know the 2022 energy price shock fueled the cost of living crisis. It also caused a profit bonanza for the very rich. We show the US reaped the largest profits ($377bn) of any country. 50% went to the richest 1%, only 1% to the bottom 50%. A🧵 www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
River or sankey diagram showing the allocation of profits from global oil and gas companies to quantiles of the US wealth size distribution via financial system intermediaries, such as asset managers, and categories of ultimate beneficiaries, such as business owners, pension funds and shareholders in listed companies. The scale is hundreds of billions of US dollars, and ultimately 50.4% of profits reaching the US personal wealth distribution go to the richest 1% of households.

The cost of living crisis showed that corporates have a playbook that will see them protected as climate induced crises hit food chains food the cost of essentials soar. But politicians and centrists, including commentators on here, will blame shop lifters and thieves when the shit hits the fan.

Mad to me that the centrist UK commentariat still insist this never happened and nothing needs to change.

I'm on the slowest bus line in the city with the slowest buses in the nation to talk to New Yorkers about what it would mean for their lives if we made them fast and free.

2. The current rhetoric of those who mobilise racism for political gain proposes that those who investigate colonial history and modern racism are the problem. Not racism itself.

The football facebook chat groups have spoken and they're backing Gary Neville.
There's a group of white, entitled middle class men who cosplay the working class of this country, deliberately sowing anger and division.

My secret evil plot to ‘destroy Britain’ has been unveiled by (checks notes) the same paper that endorsed Liz Truss.

If I don’t know better I’d say we’ve got them entirely rattled.

But then, you'd assume from this chart that a country with a balanced pension provision (ahem the UK) would be in a better position?
BUT NO!! You'd be wrong, because the OBR ALSO wants to increase the retirement age in the UK aswell.
paulhebden.bsky.social
Germany's pension problem looks to be more down to the balance between public and private provision, than down to the actual pension or pension age itself.
This from the recent OBR fiscal risks report is illustrative
paulhebden.bsky.social
I might be stupid, but is it really a great idea to be making people work for longer for a pension, amidst a collapse of the centre, the biggest drop in living standards since WW2 and a growing far right?
Who is going to rein in the centrist economic extremists?

Retirement shock for Germany: Experts propose raising pension age to 73
A group of top economic advisers to the German government has caused a stir by recommending a dramatic rise in the retirement age — all the way

I'm agreeing with you.

Germany doesn't have a fiscal crisis, it has no debt problem It's opted to spend trillions on weapons without endangering its economy.
The problem we face as society is that there is a class of "centrist" economic extremists who are intent on burning western democracies to the ground.

There are areas of the UK where people just don't want to integrate.

Newark: the constituency of Robert "Racist" Jenrick, is 90% white.

It's people like Jenrick who refuse to integrate with the rest of society.

What's the worse that could happen eh? Fascism?

I know: lets kill local jobs, sell public assets to businesses, let's make it impossible to see a GP, lets allow the cost of food and essentials rocket with no cap on supermarkets, lets keep the minimum possible state on hand to respond to murders and a few social workers to remove kids if needed.
