🚨 Master’s project!
Curious how birds find their way? 🧭🐦
Analyze decades of ringing data to study abnormal migratory routes and uncover what these deviations can reveal about the mechanisms guiding birds on their journeys. Drop me an email for details! #ornithology

Our latest nutcracker paper is out!

In a collaborative effort between @sgn.one and @vogelwarte.bsky.social we show how bird age can affect seed dispersal 🐥🌱

🌘 Flight activity peaked at night (possibly aligning with prey vertical migration)

💤 Water activity (rest & light movement) increased during the day

🏊We revealed intense surface activity which may reflect prey grabbing/scavenging & flying-intensive events that might show aerial-dipping foraging
pbecciu.bsky.social
We classified 6 behaviors from accelerometry data using a machine learning model.
At sea, petrels spent:
✈️ >75% in flight (mostly dynamic soaring)
🌊 The rest on water: resting, low-level activity, or bursts of surface action

2 additional behaviors were recorded at their burrow nest (not in figure)
Behavioural time budget at sea for each individual Bermuda petrel tagged with accelerometer and depth recorder
pbecciu.bsky.social
We tracked Bermuda petrels (cahows) during incubation using lightweight biologgers:
📍 Trips spanned ~1200 km
📆 Duration: ~10 days

🤿 99.99% of depth readings were <10 cm.
Only 5 shallow dives were recorded, none deeper than 1.57 m.

Despite specializing on deep-sea prey, cahows forage at the surface
Extension of foraging trips from Bermuda (red dot). Lines are individual trips, shaded areas are 25, 50, 75 and 95% utilisation distribution of the foraging area Bermuda petrel population. Proportion of petrels depth recorded during foraging. The majority is around 0 m (= on the surface)

🚨New paper out🚨
We used fine-scale GPS, depth & accelerometry data to reveal foraging activity of the endangered Bermuda petrel.

@worldwildlife.org's Living Planet Report warns that, over the past 50 years, the average size of monitored wildlife populations has shrunk by 73%.

Freshwater populations have suffered the heaviest decline, falling by 85%, followed by land mammals (69%), and marine life (56%).
