Are quasicrystals thermodynamic ground states? I wrote a News & Views piece for @natphys.nature.com on the work of Baek & coauthors, who used DFT (density functional theory) with clever extrapolation to show that there is strong evidence that two quasicrystals indeed are ground states. rdcu.be/eqRPM
Scooping for ground states
Nature Physics - More than a hundred quasicrystals have been found so far, but their thermodynamic stability has remained an open question. Extrapolating density functional theory calculations of...

I'm getting seasick just from looking at running a metre to the left. Up - down - up - down, no rhythm.

Are they wearing their bulletproof vests under their shirts?

They think they can use FPTP to guilt-trip left-leaning voters into voting for them with the prospect of a Reform government. It will go down like cup of cold sick and it will not work. But that won't stop them from trying.

No, Teams, I don't want to unmute my mic when I'm coughing. Not every noise deserves sharing with the people on the call.

You are transitioning from a slide show to a stop motion animation at some point around 3 slides per minute.

Our communities don’t need advice they need immediate action.

In a time of climate catastrophe coal tips are becoming ever more dangerous. Advice doesn’t help those living in homes in the shadows of dangerous coal tips.

@walesgreenparty.bsky.social knows the money needed to solve…1/2
BBC news headline with picture of coal spoil tip in Cwmtillery headline reads “About 800,000
homes to get disused coal tip advice
Families were forced from their homes in Cwmtillery after a coal tip collapsed following heavy rain during Storm Bert in November 2024”

I think the last one arrived a bit stale, might need an early replacement.

Unreal. Unbelievable. 9-0 up. 10 K for Yesavage. No hits for the Yanks.

Three more up, three more down. Strikes out the side, starting with Aaron Judge. Unreal. Unbelievable. #BlueJays #ALDS

Let's call a spade a spade.

A "flying electric taxi" is essentially a private jet.

The last thing we need more of - electric or not.

Flying is hugely energy intensive.

Let's get East West Rail built and trains running asap instead.

Flying electric taxis will be travelling between Oxford and Cambridge next year. A six-month pilot project (geddit) aims to prepare the infrastructure and develop a business case as a first step towards “commercially viable regional operations”.

New! Cassetteboy vs Keir Starmer.

This took absolutely ages, so if you'd like to buy us a coffee at ko-fi.com/cassetteboy we'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

I note that I was neither the first to make this point in response to this post, nor the most eloquent one. It seems to be a relatively widespread sentiment.
