July 4, 1776:

Thomas Jefferson noted his observations of the day's weather in Philadelphia. At 1 PM, the temperature in the city was 76°. Not even the founding of America stopped Jefferson from recording the weather in his journal.

Can see the more “traditional” strobes associated with anomalous propagation/superrefraction inland, but the returns offshore are also non-meteorological (at least in the location shown) given very low values of correlation coefficient (well below 0.8).

SPC’s severe weather database is now QC’ed and updated for all of 2024. It was quite the year, coming in 2nd place for number of confirmed tornadoes since 1950, trailing the prolific 2004 season and overtaking the historic 2011 season. 2024 did see the most Sig Wind (65+ kt) reports since 1955.

“Near historic fire weather conditions” are forecast tomorrow across much of the Southern Plains. Looks like an expansion of Extremely Critical areas northward into the Texas Panhandle, and the inclusion of a dry lightning threat in Missouri and Kansas.

I've worked 12 hour shifts and intense severe ops before, but never have I been exhausted by a forecast the way this 48-72hr mixed precip winter storm got me today

The ECMWF #AI model from yesterday (1) greatly overperformed the operational ECMWF (2), which struggles with shallow cold air masses, on the southern Plains today. The NAM (3) was still king with the shallow cold air mass, however, when compared to observations (4)

FYI Many NOAA offices in Boulder Colorado, including GML, may be part of the power outage that is occurring today. This may also affect some access to NCEI stuff too.
