San Francisco famously has never had a significant earthquake, so surely Waymo has no need to consider the public safety impacts in a major disaster.

Ok can confirm: Waymo’s are just fully bricked at any intersection with a light. The city is gonna slowly just get totally clogged with Waymo’s stopped at intersections.

I'm sympathetic to #NIH-funded authors who want to publish in #APC-based #openaccess journals and can't find the money to pay the APCs. But it's false to say that they must publish in those journals, in any other APC-based OA journals, or even in OA journals. Shame on _Inside Higher Ed_ leaving […]

It could be great if Nvidia finally induces new rules / laws stopping the claiming of revenue as organic when you invested / gave money to that company in exchange for its business.

This has long been a problem in synthetic biology, and it […]

Quick update on #openenrollment HDHPs / HSAs: benefits from employers seem to be broadly getting worse. And this has implications for whether an HDHP will pay off.

I’ve been testing a theory: many people who are high on #ai and #LLMs are just new to automation and don’t realize you can automate processes with simple programming, if/then conditions, and API calls with zero AI involved.

So far it’s been working!

Whenever I’ve been asked to make an AI flow […]

The one thing that surprised me, though, was "no PhDs". I've seen multiple jobs now with an explicit statement that "candidates with a PhD will NOT be considered". These were pretty senior positions, though not director level.

I've no idea what's up with that.

2. A tough economy really brings out the predators -- I get scam calls and/or emails every day.

3. Lots of companies moving away from full time jobs and offering hourly wage contracts with limited terms and […]

Are we doing "The ACA Sucks" Discourse again?

I'm going to guess most people hating on it from the left have never received a hospital bill the size of book; I put the apple there for scale.

That's the $1.3 million bill my kid incurred in his first ~94 days. Why does that make me respect the ACA?

I think I might go so far as to suggest that the reason so many software engineers hate R is that it's a language built to serve analysts, and engineers have never once considered the possibility that a programming language might not be built for *them*
