Moving over here from X. Mostly about my amateur astronomy and other tech things.

Feels like I haven't seen the #Sun for weeks.

We're at the peak of this solar cycle, but good prominences seem on the wane.

This is the largest I've been able to capture this cycle, back in Aug '22.
I've blacked out the disk as it was over-exposed to get this shot.

Tonight the Waxing Crescent Moon continues to appear close to Venus. A nice sight and photographic opportunity above the southern horizon after sunset. 🔭 🧪 #astrophotography

Planetary defense follow-up: that small asteroid did indeed impact Earth's atmosphere just as predicted, causing a visible fireball - score one for Team Science

A great resource for following Planetary Defense (protecting Earth from impacts by asteroids and comets) is the NASA/JPL Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS). They have tables and charts and other good stuff: cneos.jpl.nasa.gov. I use their fireball chart in my "cosmic collisions" talk...

Here's a timelapse from my sky camera of the #aurora on 10th/11th October 2024. From Lancashire, UK.

I've just got my Starlight Xpress USB filter wheel working again, after being a bit troublesome for last six months or so. Either the driver would crash when changing filters, or on initialisation the motor would just keep turning, like it couldn't find its home position.

So here I am on bluesky. Hopefully a much more pleasant place than what X has become of late. This account is mostly for my amateur #astronomy. I have a small observatory with an 8" f/5 Newtonian. I mostly image deep sky, with some comet/asteroid imaging thrown in. I live in Lancashire, UK.
