Whoa, I didn’t know that goodreads allows you to access your own reading data!
I was just idly exploring the statistics Goodreads offers for the books I've read, and I cannot stop laughing at this Y axis

That’s too cynical, but nevertheless, there is some truth to the point.
Casual reminder that the myth of “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” is a cruel hoax designed to convince poor people from all walks of life that the injustices they face are a result of their own actions, rather than an oppressive system rigged against them.

“When our attention is held for hours each day by black-box algorithms that feed us not what we want so much as what we find it hard to look away from, we are being, in a sense, deformed,” our columnist Ezra Klein writes.

“I suspect the question the administration cares about is not “is this legal,” “is this a war crime,” “is this murder” or even “is this good for America,” but rather, “isn’t this violence delightful?”

Given the sheer amount of money these MLB players make, I would imagine bribing a player doesn’t come cheap.

When I read this, I can’t help but to think back to some of the initial reactions I got from my European friends when I told them work gave me three weeks of vacation.
A couple weeks ago a friend was telling me about someone she knew who had been on maternity leave, and said she had taken "the full year." I said, "A whole year? Wow, what kind of fancy job does she have that gives her a YEAR of leave?" and my friend looked surprised & said, "... welcome to Canada?"

There are entire books out of economic history that are, in their deepest essence, an analysis of the nature, definition, and economic purpose of corruption in developing and developed economies alike and to what extent they impede and facilitate economic growth lol
one of my more crankish views is that corruption has been net positive for china’s development because it mostly is skimming off the top of big capital projects and keeps the top talent going into the CCP.

I am openly beginning to wonder wether or not I should have the teams app on my personal phone. While I love the easy communication with my coworkers, I don’t want my app to telegraph that I am available when I am not.
