I find working with an LLM requires a similar set of skills to reading a book critically, searching for evidence in an archive, all that humanities stuff

but it's two big steps harder to keep that focus with an LLM because you get back a reply in plain language designed to convince and flatter you
I continue to think LLMs are absurdly powerful for learning, and I'm using them more often for it.

The problem is that a lot of people don't have solid metacognitive skills around epistemics and autodidactism.

You've got to have a handle on what you know, how you learn, and if you're learning.

there are some kinds of programming documentation you should be able to read like a book, and even the kinds that are more like a database than a narrative are often lacking in a solid introduction, table of contents, guidance on use, etcetera

Firaxis—the studio behind the Civilization series—is hiring a historian. An *actual* historian.

And note, when they ask for "4+ years as a Writer, Narrative Designer, or other position with commensurate duties," that includes teaching, writing, and research—i.e. your Ph.D. in History.

When I worked in the hotel industry, the big chains were using ancient-ass property management software (Hilton's OnQ was from 2004 and Marriott's FOSSE is literally MS-DOS based with no mouse input) and I've been thinking about this more and more lately.

Because it worked fine.
