I envy people who feel stable in their identity a lot, and people who feel comfortable embracing the label of “genderfluid”. I agree that being nonbinary can be inherently confusing because it’s still an attempt to grapple with a system that’s flawed.

Being nonbinary is the part of my identity that’s easy to accept - conceptually, the gender binary is easy to reject, once you know about it, and doing so can be the first step to easing some of the pain of dysphoria. It’s harder to accept that my identity and dysphoria are both always changing.

are there things that one wants/values that the other doesn't?

Hell yeah the inherently multiplicity of consciousness (cause you’re both the object and subject of the experience)

I have a memory, several years BEFORE I first googled "furry" at the prompting of that older teen, of finding a guild on Neopets - "Anthropomorphism" - which seemed, at the time, strangely insistent on NOT being "furry", that Anthros were different. I was puzzled but didn't give it another thought.

So if I were forced to summarize:
- Neurodivergence and special interests (zoology, various video games/cartoons) predisposed me to an alterhuman identity
- Established creative practices on Neopets and had me processing and managing my own identity using OCs
- Bronies forced me out of my shell

Around 2011 I obtained the means for making digital art, and around that time the MLP fandom exploded, providing a very welcoming space for amateurs. So even though I had piles of sketchbooks full of furry femboys and starts to comics, I didn't establish a continuous online identity until then.
