Just FYI for anyone who mistakenly thinks the “build it yourself” approach is the solution, this was tried on the Fediverse (aka Mastodon) and the largest BIPOC populated instance was a target of an unending stream of harassment during its entire existence.
“Build your own instance” literally lets folks evade responsibility for changing bigoted behaviors by treating marginalized folks like they’re the problem instead of treating the bigotry like the problem that it is. As if the shit would go away if marginalized folks just left.

i really really want this place to be good once it opens but this focus on "protocol" rather than platform is extremely libertarian and cringe. it needs some bare minimum protections against racism, transphobia, ableism etc baked in. this is so basic. no one wants a "protocol" full of fascists
