"There is no refuge in neutrality. Silence is never innocent; it is pedagogical. To retreat from public life, avoid controversy, or reduce education to mere technique is to surrender cultural terrain to those who weaponize ignorance and cruelty,” write Henry Giroux and William Paul.
Critical education in an age of authoritarianism
At its best, education refuses to accept the world as presented by the powerful, the financial elite, or the enablers of fascism. This is why authoritarian regimes relentlessly target teachers, univer...

But we need more training to fix ICE, am I right?
🚨HOLY CRAP. An ICE whistleblower just revealed a secret memo authorizing ICE officers to break into homes without a judicial warrant, which DHS's own legal training materials say is unconstitutional!

ICE then hid the memo from the public, passing it along by word of mouth and private conversation.

Today's trash that took itself out: the person I replied to here saying we'd have to wait and see if Newsom gets the nomination.

That os fundamentally misunderstanding electoral politics. Whether he does or not is up to us. And I'm doing everything in my power to make sure that's a no.
No. We have power in this moment and don't have to "wait and see" anything. It's up to us to choose someone who's worth a damn. Have a thread.

Oh for fuck's sake. Sure.

Gavin Newsom, gleefully destroying homeless peoples' belongings, and withholding funds from California cities who don't agree to do the same.

Nope. Don't like this at all.

Not for nothing, they said the same thing about snowboarding and most contemporary sports.
The problem with elevating this class of wresting to Olympic level competition is that it cheapens the meaning of fair and honest Olympic games. Not that it can't be judged.

*sigh* Y'all do know that ICE agents, like other LEOs receive training on how to operate their weapon systems, right? If they can't follow that training (don't point less lethal weapons at faces) what makes y'all think that "de-escalation training" will do fuck all.
Other aspects:
-de-escalation training for ICE and CBP officers
-training all law officers and agents, on Americans’ right to record any interactions.
-Provides line-item funding ($20 million) for mandated, independent oversight of detention facilities

This is why you don't make training the moderate position. Democrats who are scars of their shadows think this nonsense is wining. Meanwhile in the real world armed avoid Nazis and former J6ers now have more money and bipartisan support. Easily avoidable stupidity.

These are questions that have come up with the introduction of almost every new sport into the Olympics, especially new or non-western ones. Judo, for example, ran into the "how to judge" issue.

The question of safe competition has been a question since combat sports became a thing.
How to judge chain wrestling vs lucha spots?
Will they detract points from someone for having the wrong body type like they've done in skating?
How does storytelling get judged?
How do you have a competition be safe when there's an incentive to injure the person you're against in this format?
Olympic Pro Wrestling would be especially interesting if it was modeled like Olympic Judo or other combat sports, but judged like Gymnastics or Figure Skating. Competitors would not only have to demonstrate technique but maintain kayfabe and character as they competed and adapted to other wrestlers.

I mean, if you want to get into this, we can.

The Olympics have long since been a fora for the kinds of long form storytelling that you're referring to, we simply don't think of it as "a narrative" in that way.

Consider the ways that national or cultural rivalries play out on the Olympic stage.
Additional retort: the ability to do in ring work is just one small aspect of pro wrestling as a medium, which also includes things like promo work, crowd work, & the ability to flexibly engage in LONG FORM STORYTELLING, which means you'd only be able to judge a small sliver of what pro wrestling is

I mean, this is kinda what happens if you found a democracy on stolen land acquired through genocide and attempt to build said democracy using slave labor.
How's that analysis of how a once mighty democracy founded on justice & righteousness crumbled at the hand of a cruel & foolish tyrant going. It amuses me they're still looking everywhere for answers but at the root, that it's all founded on native genocide & chattel slavery. Still waiting.

People who were right about the need to divest from policing and criminalization are not platformed in the MSM. The ones platformed are former prosecutors, cops, and pundits who know nothing. Those people keep telling you about "training" and "new tech" "solutions." It's pathetic.

I would like to see this.
I made a half joke back during the summer games during Breaking that Flat Track Roller Derby would be a great Olympic sport, but the IOC would have to get cool with a lot of things real quick. Many of which is what you’ve described here.
January 20, 2026 at 7:39 PM
Okay, hang on. This actually isn't true.

You could evaluate the aestheticism and athleticism of Pro Wrestling similarly to how you evaluate the aestheticism and athleticism of Figure Skating or Gymnastics in terms of difficulty of the techniques and so on.
Also the Olympics are a bad lense through which to view sports with creative / artistic qualities.

Pro wrestling would be dogshit as an Olympic sport.

Two reasons come to mind: first, if it was an olympic sport they'd have to ensure the safety of the athletes.

Second, our culture would have to confront the fact that this requires a degree of athleticism in contradiction to how the sport is deemed "unserious" for its association with women.
how is this not an olympic sport

You cannot overstate how startling it is to see a politician just say the thing with clarity and poise. No fearful hemming. No overwrought qualifying down til it’s meaningless. No lingering sense that there is a loyalty to a donor class or an ideology of stasis that they’d never admit to.
Mamdani: "I am in support of abolishing ICE. What we see is an entity that has no interest in fulfilling its stated reason to exist. We're seeing a government agency that is supposed to be enforcing some kind of immigration law, but instead what it's doing is terrorizing people."

This book banning bill would set the precedent that the Miller Test is irrelevant, which will legally imperil creators nationwide, especially queer creators. It died last year and it's shambling corpse has been trotted out to horrify us anew this year.

If you're in FL pls call your state reps.
Please email members of each Subcommittee and stress your opposition to the bills.
