Functional Neurological Disorder does not mean:

* you’re faking
* you’re responsible for becoming ill
* you could stop it if you wanted
* it’s “just anxiety”
* that you don’t really have a disability
* that there’s no hope

Latest attempt to try and define predictive brain mechanism in #FND in the simplest terms -

A disconnect in the brain where -

Beliefs/expectations + prior experiences

Outweigh

Incoming sensory input from present reality

Does that seem accurate? Any thoughts appreciated 🙏

New NHS England Neurology Service specification.

✅FND is one of seven core subspecialties
✅FND services MUST be provided in each specialised neurology centre.

This is huge recognition of how common FND is in neurology - and unthinkable 20 yrs ago. 1/

Why do people develop #FND? It’s complex and there isn't just one factor.

🔑 Underlying genetics, chronic illness, trauma
⚡ Triggering stress, illness, injury
🔄 Maintaining anxiety, stigma, lack of support

FND = biopsychosocial illness. Real symptoms. Real support is needed.

I’m a neuropsychologist who works with people living with FND.

I was told recently that no one in the UK with #FND falls through the cracks anymore.

But the stories I hear tell a different truth.

This #FNDAwarenessDay, I’m not just raising awareness.
I’m amplifying voices.

It’s FND awareness day.

It’s the most common reason for a neurology referral second to headache.

Why has no one heard of it?

Two years ago I could drive, walk easily, talk easily, think and communicate efficiently, see and hear clearly and sleep soundly.

It's a little thing but getting added to group chats for my tennis clubs' league team especially after being told a few years back that I'd never compete again due to my FND is wild

Got diagnosed, "retired" from tournaments, came back two years later in better health, now I'm playing for my club

1/Recently I’ve been wondering if #FND is a disease of modern living, the brain hasn’t evolved much in the last 40,000 years, and in terms of human history, civilisation is a recent invention, approximately 6000 years old.
